Default protection layer of blu-ray discs

Hi, am currently a student and am presently doing a report about BD. would like to find out what it means to say that the protection layer of BDs are 0.1mm while that of DVDs are 0.6mm.
Does this mean that BDs are more prone to data loss due to scratching compared to DVDs since their protection layer is less?
Am sorry for the stupid question but i just have to find out. Thanks a bunch!

Default Blu-ray Protection Layer, Capacity and Multi-Layer Discs

Hi Shunze,

the "Background of Blu-ray Disc Technology" document at the official blu-raydisc website:

http://blu-raydisc-official.org/tecinfo/index.html

provides a good introduction to this, and the Technical White Papers provide further useful information, but if you don't have Japanese language support installed they'll complain on almost every page (but they're not that big, so it needn't be too much of a problem for a quick look).

Apart from the fact that Blu-ray was designed to behave more like DVD-RAM than DVD, one of the interesting consequences of the DVD and HD-DVD structure is that it is limited to two layers, whilst Blu-ray was designed from the outset to support multi-layer recording, and in the longer term multi-level recording. 50GB on two layers (due this Summer) is just the start - four layers on an upgraded Universal Media Disc would give around 24GB on a 6cm disc, for example. or 100GB on a CD-sized disc with backwards compatibility with CD and DVD - great for computer backup and archival, or home AV servers on a disc.

Hope this helps, but don't study too hard!
