Default ONKYO 805 - PS3 won't work with HDMI

Hi all,

Little bit of a dilema...

I have an ONKYO 805 that outputs through component and digital audio cables to my surround speakers and TV. I went ahead and hooked up the PS3 to HDMI1 for both Video and Audio set for GAME/TV channel with the HMDI Monitor set to NO (since HDMI is not to TV). I have the analog A/V cables hooked up to GAME/TV as well since I have to switch the PS3 over to HDMI settings for setup. With all of this, it switches over and I have a black screen and after 30 seconds.. the PS3 defaults back to A/V analog settings.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance for the help!

Chris

I believe you can't go down the scale in inputs, meaning you can't go in hdmi and out component.

Yep. You need to have HDMI in to HDMI out.

run the Component cables straight to the TV and keep the HDMI in receiver for audio. (tell the PS3 to output video over Component, and audio over HDMI)

At least you will get Lossless audio.

The Griff, does your TV have an HDMI input at all? Some features on the PS3 are only available through HDMI. Maybe a DVI input?

Yes, the TV has two HDMI inputs. The surround system is all integrated into the wall and only is done through component and digital audio. Looks like ill just have to HDMI to the TV and Digital Audio to the receiver for now, until I can get HDMI wired up.

Thank you all for your help! I didn't know it wouldn't convert from HDMI to component so lesson learned

So, you're saying you're going to connect the HDMI from the PS3 to the receiver then an HDMI from the receiver to the TV? That's how you should have it anyways.

Huh, i think im a little confused by this. Why dont you just have HDMI from ps3 to receiver, then another one from receiver to tv?

Oh, I saw that. It's just he was trying to use HDMI and then component. He needs to get his HDMI cables setup too. You can't get lossless (except 2.0 PCM) from optical.

Apparently, he's limited by his integrated wall setup. Since he's relegating himself to non-HDMI digital audio (lossy), I'm guessing it would take a lot of work for him to run HDMI for audio. It's too bad if it's true, because I think HDMI's biggest impact is on the audio side.

Default i have no idea what you trying to do but here is my tip.

i have an Onkyo 705. I have a PS3 and HDTV with one HDMI input.

My PS3 video is set to (DVD) HDMI1 for video input to 705.

My PS3 audio is set to (DVD) HDMI1 for watching movies.

If i want to hear stereo from PS3 but converted it to Surround Sound Mode such as DOLBY Pro Logic IIx, Neo:6, DSP or THX modes... then
I set the PS3 to A/V with the composite cable to (DVD) Left and Right "White and Red" input to the 705. but you must press the DIGITAL INPUT button til you see "---" in order to hear the analog sound while leaving Video to HDMI for HD picture.

If you going to watch movies again and listen to audio in Dolby TruHD, PCM, DTS-MA... make sure you go back and set the PS3 to HDMI and press the DIGITAL INPUT button on your receiver til you see "HDMI1".

As for TV, I always have HDMI cable from HDMI output (705) to HDMI input (HDTV) to keep the Hi Def picture.

Default If u have no HDMI on your tv then try this:

#1) First, Hook up your component to the output of your receiver to your tv.

#2) Hook up an HDMI cable from your PS3 output to IN1 input under HDMI secton.

#3) Get your 805 remote control and press SETUP.

#4) GO to IN/OUT Assign THEN go to Monitor Out THEN go to HDMI Monitor but set it to "NO"

#5) Turn on your PS3 and wait til you get a message about setting your HDMI as default or Set the PS3 to HDMI for both video and audio.

*if cable were hook up with HDMI through IN1 (DVD) or (GAME/TV), make sure you go to SETUP then 1. IN/OUT Assign THEN go to 2. HDMI INPUT THEN set DVD or GAME/TV IN1 whichever HDMI were hooked up to from your PS3 and then try to turn on the PS3 and follow step #5.

I hope he does get the HDMI setup done properly though. There's no reason for not having HDMI there. In the mean time, he can take the HDMI cables and just put them behind the entertainment center. It's not like it will be that noticeable.
