I'm in the market for a Blu Ray player. I was wondering if anybody had an idea of the best deal for a Blu Ray player in terms of price and/or sound/picure quality. I've heard good things about the Sony player and bad things about the cheaper Samsung player and some of the other models. I don't know much about the player in the PS3 because I hate PS3 but I'd be willing to get it if it's the better deal in terms of it's Blu Ray playback capabilities and because it's relatively cheap and I'm on a modest budget. Any suggestion??

sorry to hear you don't like the ps3, however for the money it continues to be one of the top players on th market
if you just want to go standalone, the original samsung bd-p1000 is not a bad player. however, with some of the newer players coming out you'd prob be better off with one of those. possibly hold off and wait for the second gen sony |

The issue you are talking about is some people that have old HDTV displays without scalars might need to play some 720P games at 480P quality since their display can not handle native 720P. Most BLU-RAY games and movies on PS3 are 1080P and the PS3 will output the signal at 1080P or 1080I. 1080I signals are supported by most old HDTV displays. |

The PAL PS3 works perfectly at 1080p and 1080i resolutions for a 1080p or 1080i BD. If set to output to only 720p it drops back to 520p (I'm guessing) unless it's a 720p source (tested with a game). This is a known bug and should not be a problem as most 720p monitors will accept 1080i and even 1080p inputs. Agreed there are many people out there saying the PS3 is the worst device ever made and would never own one (unless it had a HD-DVD drive in it...)
My computer monitor (24") can handle progressive only my projector is a 720p but can accept 1080i signals. |

Anyways, PS3 is an incredible Blu-ray player and game machine. It's the best $600 you'll ever spend. It feels more like a high end piece of home theater equipment rather than a game console. ![]() |

Hands down... Samsung BD-P1200
You want 1080p at 24fps. You want one of the better prices. Get this. The problem is that you still won't get all of the future capabilities of BR with it. If the PS3 did 24fps, I'd recommend that. Some day, maybe it will. I have my doubts, though. Last edited by Greenmatiz2; 05-13-2007 at 10:07 AM. |

I have a PS3 connected to a pioneer elite reciever that processes hdmi sound output. I can set the movies I watch to uncompressed audio, and it is frikin awesome. The PS3 is a home entertainment unit, not just a video game machine.

In terms of Blu Ray playback is it worth the $600?? I mean, I dont like PS3 at all(because of the crappy games) but if it plays back Blu Ray movies as good(or on an acceptable level) as the other stand alone Blu Ray players I'd definitely get it.

If you want analog outs, Dolby True HD and upconversion for regular DVDs, then I think you'll like the Panasonic player. Although it is a bit pricey.

Surely, there are not many games on PS3 right now, but it is a new console and new consoles never have dozens and dozens of must play games..but do you really think there are no games? Straight out of the box, with no discs, and no purchased games..you can download Gran Turismo HD concept, an incredible racing game, and for a "demo", it will take 20-30 hours to play through completely, depending on how good you are at racers. Then there is the Ninja Gaiden Sigma demo, which can easily last you around 5 hours, it is very fun and has one complete level and a special mission: the graphics are amazing and the gameplay is very fun. On top of that, without any discs, with no additional purchases, you can listen to mp3s, CDs, SACDs, watch DVDs, and if you owned a PSOne or PS2, play all of your old favorites. Not only that, but you can watch videos from a memory card or downloaded [even anime and porn!!] straight from the Internet..which leads me to..fully functional web browsing! You can even watch Youtube on it! Plus with USB cords and bluetooth, you can webchat with a USB video camera or bluetooth headset, you can use a real keyboard or mouse too! Then come the actual discs..no games? Are you crazy? Resistance, Motor Storm, Viruta Fighter are some hot exclusives right now, plus lots of third party games that play as good if not better than on the X-Box 360. Plus there's tons of downloadable games that are worth it: Tekken Dark Resurrection, Sudoku, Super Rub a Dub, Calling All Cars, just to name a few. Add to this, the power of Blu Ray! Believe it or not, the PS3 is one of the best players on the market, and through firmware updates, it can stay compatible with all the latest features! The image and sound quality is amazing, and with the bluetooth remote or even the six axis wireless controller, it is easy to use and has no real bugs. Quite honestly, I don't understand how your heart wants to go blu and you hate the PS3.. Get a PS3..buy some blurays...you won't see life, media, gaming, or HT the same way ever again! |

I also recently purchased a Samsung BD-P1200. I have experience the "can't play this disc" a couple of times for Blu-Ray discs that the system has already played (brand new discs). I was wondering how you knew about the Firmware update. When I go to the Samsung site, the only firmware update they list is for the BD-P1000. Overall I really like the Samsung BD-P1200. Super picture on Blu-Ray discs and a great up-convert on regular DVDs. I am glad I didn't wait. This system fits my needs for clear defined pictures.

I highly recommend the PS3 even if you never play a game on it. I've had mine for a couple of weeks now and love it.
It's a tremendous BD player that also gives you many more options that are mentioned in other posts here. It's fast. Playback is beautiful. Sound is awesome. I don't know what else to say. |
