SUPERMAN RETURNS was I think the first film to use the Panavision Genesis cameras, which are I believe are the most technologically advanced HD cameras in the film industry now. When Singer did a screen test with Brandon Routh, they filmed it in 65 mm just for the Hell of it. And then when they filmed some shots with the Genesis cameras, they saw that the quality was identical. Which really shows in the film.

Singer has tons of overhead shots, deep space shots (the shot of Lois looking down on the streets of Metropolis always make me gasp due to the sheer depth of it), and inserts of close ups that heighten your sense and really draws you into the film. So I'm a firm believer that shooting in HD won't make your film look cheap. I guess it depends on how you use it. Jake Kasdan is another filmmaker who swears by HD. His last two films (THE TV SET and WALK HARD) were both shot in HD and you can barely tell.
