Are you getting test tones from the rear speakers? If not, then you may have them hooked into the "surround rear" outputs. They must be connected to the "surround L/R" outputs in order for them to work in 5.1. Double check that, its probably where you are going wrong.

I am getting a test tone from the left rear, not the right rear, calibration stops with ''error'' message after that.

Thanks

5.1 Ace.

I am getting sound from all 6 speakers, I had to set it up manually, I might as well walk into a hospital today and do brain surgery.. Kef manual does not offer any ''suggestions'' as to hz. db's, etc...so I guess I'm all over the place.

I recommend that you make sure the room is dead quiet. And when you think the room is completely silent, make sure you are not in the room when running the calibration. You should only go in the room when you are moving the microphone around. Also, make sure the microphone is connected to a tri-pod or microphone boom correctly. <<< This is critical.

Initially, I had to run an HDMI cable to another room and connect the cable to secondary video source to do the calibration. The fans in my Sony XBR were loud enough to cause the calibration to fail. But since then I upgraded to Audessey Pro and I run the calibration from my laptop (location in another room) which is very cool.

Finally, there is an excellent thread over at avsforum that is monitored by an Audessey expert.

I still think you probably have that right surround speaker hooked up to the right rear output, it should be connected to the right side output instead. If the connection is fine, then I'm not sure what to tell you.

Good deal, learn something new with every post, would the sound be, if conneted properly, ok if I kept the speakers in the rear, where they are now, or would I have to move them to the sides, which could create a problem with my lay out in the living room.???

If you are having 7.1 set up the Left and right surrounds should be on your sides and the rear surrounds should be to your back.

if your having a 5.1 set up skip the side surrounds and the only surrounds you will be having would be the back ones and YES you should connect them to the Left and Right surrounds of your reciver NOT the REAR SURROUNDS..Hope it helps.

You'll be fine. but to be honest im not sure how the auto calibration will work with them behind you compared to the sides...

The position of the surrounds is not that critical as long as you have them connected to the proper output. When you set your receiver to 5.1, then the surrounds will not work unless they are connected to the L/R side outputs. They should be to the sides of you.

Guys,

Thanks for all the good advice, I believe I DO have them set up as the back surrounds, seemed logical at the time, I will switch them tonight and see what happens..

Thanks again.

I made the same mistake when I set mine up. I hooked up the two rears to the surround back speaker inputs on the receiver instead of the surrounds speaker input. The calibration kept failing and I was really irritated as I had just spent hours getting everything set up. As soon as I plugged the speakers into the surround speaker inputs, and ran the calibration, everything worked fine and I had sound in about 10 minutes. The manual does not indicate that 5.1 rears are surrounds back and added 7.1 rears are for the surround back speakers.

Its sort of funny to me to think what might have happened if I actually had 7.1 to start with, I probably would have put the 4 rears into the wrong place in the receiver and may not have realized anything was wrong!

And the difference was noticable, correct.???
after the calibration do you need to tweak anything, or is it that good.??

You should be good and the calibration will most likely be the most accurate reproduction of sound for your room unless you have an SPL meter..

Oh, just make sure you have the speakers set to large or small depending on what you've got..

small to large, I assume that is done DURING the calibration.
