Default True Full Range Speakers!

Most "full-range" speakers aren't really full range. Some speakers have "subwoofers" built in to get a range, but they never really seem to cut it. This is what Elemental Designs has been designing and have created. It is amazing looking. Someone who has money should take them for a ride. Thoughts?

It's been done. Def Tech did it with their BP series (the original ones), Mirage did it with the M-1's and M-3's, VPMS has been doing it for years, and so has Legacy. There are speakers with no powered subs that reach down to 17hz. I'm not surprised.

P.S. But they are interesting

It doesn't look like they are powered there, just bi-amped. I know real full-range speakers have been done before, it's just that looks mighty different from them fine, fancy regular kinds.

my RF-35s are spec'd to go as low as 35Hz... I can guarantee that if they go that low its very quiet when they do, but I've ran a bass tester that starts at 5 Hz and at around 50Hz you can feel the bass from the towers.... but to me full range speakers are a waste anyways cuz you're gonna use a sub to get the bass in 99% of situations anyways, so you can just use towers with good range and do a nice smooth crossover

Good full-range speakers aren't always used for HT anyways. Especially those.

I don't think they are powered either. The drawing has no amp anywhere and the back of the speakers doesn't show anything but two inputs. Plus he said he had to break out a standalone EQ and 5kW of power...... not many people have that laying around!

With the exception of the MTM design, it reminds me of several different speakers. Of course the MTM design is well known and since Mr. D’Appolito took over at snell - it reminds me alot of their new products - with the exception of the vent on the top. When I think of that - they remind me of the old AR 12LS speakers which had a supertweeter, tweeter, mid range, midbass, and downfiring 12 inch woofer with a vented port. These speakers are more of a throw back to when great speakers where made.

I have never needed a sub with the Def Tech BP 7002's. Sure a stand alone sub would be nice but is not needed. I would say that these are full range and yes they do cut it. The newer Mythos ST are even better. But the BP7000 and 7001 series are really nice with 1800 watt super cube subs built in.

This is true, but we are refering to speakers that do not have built in powered subs. What the OP is talking about is a totally passive tower system that's capable of subwoofer range performance !

I need to explore bi-amping a little further.

I never thought I would buy more speakers, but now I'm actually at a point where there is nothing left to buy (hogwash) so I might check this out and use my current fronts for the stereo in my Rehearsal studio.

Non-powered, customer has a separate rack for power.

The 5kW = 1 EP2500 for sub, 1 EP2500 for full range.

The thing was frightening during the sweep and hearing Ben cackle in the office was neat

I know, that was my point. You won't find many people who have amps in their homes capable of 5kW output. I bet they were frightening during the sweep

AHHA, I forgot the part where that amount of amp is totally unnecessary

Realistically, 100W on the full range portion and 600W~1kW on the sub would work out fantastically.

I listened to a prototype of these speakers when I was at Elemental Design's office in May. We were watching the standard def version of Transformers and it was among the best sounding speakers I've ever heard. I can't imagine how good this would sound with uncompressed bd sound.

What kind of ohms are the speakers Chris? I'm thinking this would be the amp you'd want with it?

I’ve developed a real interest in full range speakers. Been checking out some sites, and these seem to be pretty popular:

http://www.madisound.com/catalog/pro...roducts_id=270

Or, I could get out my Dremel tool and build a pair of these:

BTW – would the Fostex in a good enclosure make for a good HT speaker?
