Default Do Surround Speakers Get Full Hz Treatment?

Lets see if I can word this properly. I have two Boston Acoustic towers for my surrounds.

Do Surrounds in HD receive the full low to high Hz range as the two front main speakers?

If they DO receive low end HZ, I was toying with the idea if adding an extra sub at the surrounds. Thoughts?

The simple answers to your questions are Yes and Yes. Read the following threads.
"A Guide to Home Audio CODECs": All the channels are full band-width.
https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=41820

"A Guide to Subwoofers": 2 or 4 subwoofers are better than one. Make sure they are identical subs.

Thank you BD! Your system is awesome by the way. Looks like I'll be getting another sub. I know its supposd to be identical, but bare with me a moment. I have a JBL 400 Watt sub that goes down to 23 or 26 hz. I want to upgrade to a higher end sub to put in front and move the JBL to the back going thru the rear speakers first. What sub would you recommend for the front with aprox $1500.00 give or take a couple hundred? Thanks...

The channels are full bandwidth, but you don't need a subwoofer for each surround.

Many receivers can be set to crossover to mix and send the lows present in ALL channels onto the subwoofer(s). The use of multiple subwoofers will even out the volume at various seating positions and you use the same subwoofer output.

There is no need to worry about directionality. You're mostly feeling the very lows, not hearing them, and you have little directional perception.

Thanks everyone. I'll start looking for a higher end sub for the front and connect the JBL to the rear speakers! If anyone can recommend a favourite sub for aprox $1500.00, please chime in!

A second sub is only worthwhile if you run from the sub out, if you run speaker level it is a waste of time for rear speakers, the low frequency has already been taken out.

Thats part of my original question. I think. I have a dedicated out for the sub on the Onkyo 805. The crossover is 80hz and below for the sub and 80hz and above for the two front mains. Is the 80hz crossover to the sub taking all 80 hz and below - even from the rear speakers?

Sub's are omni-directional so I don't believe it would really matter which channel the bass below your 80hz setting came from.

it should send below 80hz to the lfe output for all channels even the surrounds, but you would probably enjoy a second sub anyway should be sweet

Yes that is correct but you will find that there is little low frequency content in the surround channels anyway even if you were to run them full range.

If you want good subs that are also good value, nobody can do better than Hsu Research. At $1,000, this is my recommendation:

I want a sub that can send a big blast of air that you can feel hit you in the gut WITHOUT cranking it out loud and under 9". Somehow I think that's impossible.

I agree, it would make more sense for MCH music listening.

Sorry, not true. Low frequencies propagate outwards in all directions, but that doesn't mean it is not localizable below 80Hz (despite the THX standard being 80Hz).

The SVS PB13-Ultra is $1599 + $99 shipping
http://www.svsound.com/products-sub-box-pb13ultra.cfm

Epik Conquest is $1599, one of the best subs on the market, but shipping is $233 so unless you're going for in-store pick-up....
http://www.epiksubwoofers.com/ConquestOverview.html

I think the AV123 MFW-15 should be a serious consideration at $599.

In Craigsub rankings on AVS this little baby outperformed the $5,000 Velodyne DD-18, the JL Audio Fathom 112 and the top Hsu Research subs! Get duals for $998!

Elemental Designs A7-700 is $1600 with free shipping - 1300 Watts RMS, dual 15" drivers, massive beast
