Default Amp with Yamaha Receiver.

Anybody have an amp connected to a Yamaha receiver that has the extra speakers hookup? Since the pre outs on the receiver are for "front speakers". Would the speakers connected to the extra speakers terminals be affected or would it only affect the main set of front speakers? I'm wanting to use an amp just for the extra "Front B" speakers for music listening. Appreciate any input.

I think that is one of the (useful) reasons why the mains are switchable.

I believe that the Hard A/B (as opposed to zone 2 and 3) are both effected by eferything the Yamaha does. You are simply switching the wonder from one set of mains to another so I believe an external amp will effect both A+B.

Is this not in your manual???

I would say it depends on your receiver, what receiver do you have?

For example from the manual of the RXV-863, I can see that receiver as separate pre-outs for the "zone 2" so in that case you would have to connect the amp to the "zone 2" pre-outs and your other fronts to the zone 1 speaker posts. Also no speakers should be connected to "zone 2/front B/front 2" speakers post if you are using the "zone 2" pre-outs. Anyway check your manual, it should be clear enough.

It is the 863 and if it has "Zone 2" pre outs I missed them. All I can see are the front pre outs that are grouped along with the others, center, surround, etc.... What page of the manual says it has separate zone 2 pre outs?

That's what I'm thinking (and hoping), just seemed a little too easy and wanted verification before I spring for an amp.

Page 10 (Zone 2 out, refered as item no. 4 on the diagram)

Maybe there are regional differences...

This helps. If I'm reading the manual right, you would still have the speakers connected to the "extra speakers" terminals and use them for "Zone B". Still confused though because with an external amp the speakers would be connected to the amp and not the receiver...

The "extra speakers" terminals will be used for zone 2 (or B) if you use the Yamaha internal amplifier. This is what is show on page 107 ("Using the internal amplifier of this unit"). The way you want to do it is what is shown on page 106 "using the external amplifier". To be sure you could contact Yamaha.

Good advice and that's what I did. Spoke to a Yamaha tech and he said it SHOULD work by just connecting to the front speaker pre outs, that all front speaker terminals would be affected and then just switch from A to B when using the external amp. After I got off the phone with him it dawned on me that wouldn't be exactly correct either because there will be no speakers connected to "B" as they will be connected directly to the amp. I'm thinkin (and again hoping) it will just be a matter of making sure "A" is turned off when using the external amp.
