Default Dvd...better quality than a theater right?

I really am suprised. A lot of people on this site seem to think the picture quality of a movie theater is better than the picture quality of a dvd. Yes I understand DVDS look like crap on an HDTV, but dvds on a regular tv look better than a theater...i never ever thought once in my life that someone would say a theater has better PQ than a dvd...thats really shocking to me

Please don't spam our website. You don't need to start a new thread about how you think that Blu-ray isn't worth the money...

You are only showing your ignorance. Instead of whining and crying...why don't you try reading through this forum and you'll learn a LOT!

you probably wouldn't say that if the image from your dvd was blown up to the size of a movie theatre screen. It would look craptacular.

This feels like a bait thread. I'd recommend finding a better theater and going early on screenings.

Which is shocking to me because opinions aside 35mm film is well over 2x the resolution of Blu, much higher color depth, and no compression.

OK a DVD has 480i x 720 pixels in a 16:9 shape

That is equivalent to about 368p x 654

The ITU tests on theatrical projection done some years ago meaured near 700 lines per picture height visible on screen resolution. That's close to 720p x 1280. That was sitting at around 1.5 times the picture height distance from the screen. Now if you sit at the back of the theater like many people from the VHS generation do, that's nealy 3.6 times the picture height (more than twice the distance) mmm 720p x 1280 / 2 = 360p x 640. Voilá. One reason you might think DVDs look better than theaters = sitting too far away to notice the difference. Reason 2: Well if the projectionist throws the focus off, you might loose 4 times the resolution, and you end up again with 360p x 640 or less. Then your theater errr.. sucks.
