DVD Upconvert- Quality?

Someone please provide a technical explanation of the DVD "upconvert" process available on some players, and your opinion of the quality. I own a Sony S300 Blu-ray player and I do notice a significant improvement in picture quality of my DVDs. How is this accomplished? Is the Sony S300 one of the best at upconverting DVDs? Is an upconverted DVD almost as good as Blu-ray? Any response appreciated -thanks.

Upscaling is a process that mathematically matches the pixel count of the output of the DVD signal to the physical pixel count on an HDTV, which is typically 1280x720 (720p) or 1920x1080 (1080i).

720p represents 1,280 pixels displayed across the screen horizontally and 720 pixels down the screen vertically. This arrangement yields 720 horizontal lines on the screen, which are, in turn, displayed progressively, or each line displayed following another.

1080i represents 1,920 pixels displayed across a screen horizontally and 1,080 pixels down a screen vertically. This arrangement yields 1,080 horizontal lines, which are, in turn, displayed alternately. In other words, all the odd lines are displayed, followed by all the even lines.

He is wrong after that about the "best" cable being analog component, the best is of course HDMI (digital component).
Also he does not mention 1080p, which can now be done by some DVD upscalers (like the Oppo 981).

The thing is, for an article destined to newcomers to HD, I am glad that he specifies that

Don't confuse upscaling of standard DVDs with the native high definition output resolutions of Blu-ray and HD-DVD. Upscaling of standard DVDs is an appoximation of high definition, while Blu-ray and HD-DVD are true high definition sources.

Of course, HD DVD being dead ...

Welllll, in this thread, which you started: https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...946#post697946 , you, yourself ask essentially the same questions, and you've already advised everyone that you see no significant benefit via BD vs. upconversion (sic).

Other than a technical explanation of "upconversion", how is this thread any different?

FYI, upconversion is the process used to change, say, analogue inputs to HDMI output. Upscaling is the process used to enhance 480i input to 1080p output.
