Default Itagaki says PS3 development is easier than Famicom

http://www.1up.com/do/feature?pager....=1&cId=3169608

Quote:
1UP: In terms of hardware, you know, one hardware that obviously isn't just a superpowered PC is the very architecturally complex Playstation 3. And, do you think, in almost ironic fashion, that the PS3 and its compliated hardware has widened the gap between top-tier development teams and the smaller development teams with fewer resources? Meaning, do you think that the complexity of the hardware has actually made it harder to run for most medium-to-smaller Japanese development teams to keep pace with, say, western developers are doing on the Xbox 360?

TI: First of all, I think that the PS3 was kind of an attempt by Kutaragi-san to create a uniquely Japanese computer to take on the Wintel standard. Ani I think that Kutaragi-san was very much a fighter pilot in the hardware realm just as I was a fighter pilot in the software realm, and in that sense I have a lot of respect for him. To me, having a fighter that is easy to pilot thats easy to pilot and as powerful, makes it easy to win. And thats my main goal, and thats why I choose to pilot a 360. One more thing I would like to add is that I don't think that developing for the PS3 is hard at all. It was much harder developing for the Famicom. Yeah, I mean, give someone who's developing for a PS3 a Famicom and see if they can make a game for it. They won't be able to. Yeah, that'll prove it. We'll bet a drink on it.

1UP: What was so hard developing on the Famicom?

TI: Yeah, I'm under NDA, so I can't really talk about it. [Laughs] No, It's just there's a lot of things these days that the young guys don't know about.
Is this the truth, or just a joke? Does this mean that drunk will start developing games for the PS3 and probably port Ninja Gaiden 2? I'm asuming that this is more of a joke than the truth.

If he's making PS3 games depends where he's working now and no, he won't be involved in porting Ninja Gaiden II as he left Team Ninja.

I'm just glad to hear Itagaki say that the PS3 is not difficult to program on. Different? Yes. Difficult? No. His drunken ass could have easily had launched an anti-PS3 tirade, and that wouldn't have been pretty.

Maybe John Carmack and Gabe Newell just need a few belts of whiskey in them before talking to reporters about PS3 development.

Maybe the M$ pay-off money ran out and he'd like Sony to fund his drinking habits now?

I really like Itagaki. He seems a little arrogant but he really knows what he likes and how he wants his games. I also agree with his dislike of how Ninja Gaiden II turned out. It wasn't a major step above NG black game play from the original Xbox or the PS3 remake. At least you know how he feels about things!

I wonder if the fact that developing for the PS3 is hard is the reason some games have a low FPS or is it just the porting of some games over to the PS3 that causes this issue ?

I would say its the porting and sheer laziness on the side of the developer (Lost Planet)

Games that are developed on both at the same time look identical.
dmc4, cod4, gta4....damn 4's

I really hate Itagaki. He definitely isn't "a little arrogant". He redefines the word. This is the douche that labeled his four most hated games, all four Tekken games :rolls eyes: I don't know why I hate him more:
1. He's a pretentious a-hole
2. He's a MS shill.

He's probably only trying to say positive things (for once) about the ps3 because he's out of work.

I'm really surprised MS hasn't given him his own studio, considering all the Bill Gates he has on his chin.

The context is that he perfers to work with the 360 due to ease of development.

He respects the PS3, and it's a different beast and approach. He is defending his ego by saying he can develop for the PS3, and further stating that it's an easier system to develop for than the Famicom.

My guess as to why the ease, it has more to do with the change in programming software and mindsets in the past 20 years, and further migration of higher-level languages to the gaming consoles instead of depending on alot of assembly level programming to handle things.

I'd rather we didn't resort to those sorts of personal attacks.

My guess is that as a developer for the Famicom he had to sign a NDA promising not to disclose proprietary information regarding the format [prolly for perpetuity, or until the item becomes 'public domain'].

I think that was just a joke.

I believe he's just talking about writing in assembly.

If you read the whole story, he never implies he's working on PS3, but I'm betting since he's out of work, he's trying to leave options open. He goes on to say that you should pick the easiest to pilot and still equally good jet, which is the 360. So he pretty much says he still prefers the 360. I think he's just trying to claim that the PS3 isn't HARD, it's just HARDER than 360, so why bother? That's what I got, anyway. Like reiella said.

Oh boo, Shin-Ra. It's all in good fun.

I'm just quietly amused that everyone here is defending Itagaki now that he says something nice about the PS3, but when he was slagging off Ninja Gaiden Sigma a few months back, he was persona non grata.
