I have to be almost jealous as in Europe we never have Hurricanes or twisters. You have them all. I'd like to see a twister in real and not just in video although not too close

Like the huricane back in '03? We lived in Richmond back then, and riding-out that one was kinda-fun (no offense to those who've lost property, or worse, friends and family to mother nature). We all congregated at our neighbor's house, drank beer in the dark after the power went out (until we got the jenny working) and watched the trees uproot and fall. We were lucky in that we had no damage to our house and they got the power back on in <18hrs in our neighborhood. Others in the area didn't fare as well. Power was out in some places for a week and lots of houses were damaged by falling trees. The one large tree I had at the back corner of my lot fell away from my house and onto another tree that had already fallen on the neighbor's house (driving that tree farther into the structure). The following day was spent drinking beer and running chain saws (not your best combination )

I have to disagree with you. We're just lucky that our countries arn't affected by 'canes and 'nados (hey thats a good new thing to call them). Just think of the damage. We don't have the protection involved for this sort of situation, Just like this:

Being from south Ms, I can tell you, you DONT want hurricanes. There's nothing fun, cool, or exciting about them. It's a a constant pain in the a$$ threat we have to live with every year.
There are areas around here that still show damage from Katrina.
I can name about 100 people off the top of my head, who are still in FEMA trailors.

If you went through a hurricane that jealousy would disappear straight away. There's nothing great about it, I live in Florida and we recently had one hit us ffs, they're a pain and a real mess. Consider yourself very lucky.

Well, I live in Florida, the hurricane capital of the US (not officially, of course). While there are some nice things about major storms (school/work closures, hosting/attending a hurricane party, etc), it's not worth it, AT ALL.

I've had my church ripped apart by a tornado. I've also known plenty of folks who've had to deal with flooding, and wind damage from hurricanes. Let's also not forget the biggest pain, which is insurance. Our rates in Florida are flat out CRAZY. The insurers petition to raise rates AT LEAST 25% per year (State Farm requested 49% this year). Most people pay anywhere from $1200 - $4000. (25% yields an annual increase of $300 - $1000). Let's also not forget, insurers regularly "drop" coverage for people here BECAUSE THEY'RE TOO RISKY ... what's the point of carrying INSURANCE??!?!?!

So, if you live 20 years in Florida and never file a claim, you just threw away how much money in insurance???

Sorry for the rant. Have a nice day.

I'm with you on that, I'm from New Orleans, and that's the one and only time I've ever evacuated for a hurricane, and man am I VERY glad I did. I know plenty of people who's houses are still gone, and they haven't gotten money from Road Home (our government "bail out" program), so are stuck.

Pretty soon you will see no insurance availible in certain states such as florida and parts of california like the idiots who continue to build in fire zones that catch fire every single year!

Well, we have a state-sponsored insurance plan here called "Citizen's" and is supposed to be the most expensive of all of the insurers. It's supposed to be "the insurer of last resort", but our legislators are finding that "last resort" is upon us.

In Central Florida here, and after the 2004 hurricanes our insurance went from $1100 per year to over $5000 per year, and since owning this house we've had no claims at all. We've had 3 insurance companies in the past 4 years (they drop your coverage after a while and pull out of the state leaving you to find another insurance company). Then this idiotic governor decided to cut property taxes (which came to a big $219 savings for me), but now we are going to have to pay extra for police and fire protection, so any "savings" is now an extra expense. This state was at one time a place where people went to retire, but I don't know how anyone can retire here now.

This last storm this past week did some horrendous damage to people on the east coast of the state (and some parts in the interior) and I only hope that some help comes to them so they can get their houses back in order. But I have a feeling they'll be getting the shaft from FEMA and put on the FEMA diet (no food or water for 2 weeks).

Lol FEMA is the most useless government program in our country today IMO. I really think they would have a hard time organizing a cook out, never mind relief help to thousands of people!
