Angry Real Dissapointing European Ps3 News

well, seems like we may be getting a sub par PS3 in europe after news that the european version will NOT play as many PS1 or PS2 games as the japanese or american versions.

As a gamer i would hate this as i own 50+ PS2games and would be dissapointed if they did not work on my PAL PS3 as i waited to get it from here just for the fact that i wouldn't be able to play my PS2 games if i got it from japan or america.

If all my PS2 games play on it, i'll be happy but this news is cvertainly disturbing and only time will tell if we are really being ripped off

Indeed, where did you hear this? Do you have a link? Unlike what M$ fanbois say, the ps3 has a very high backwards compatibility rate with ps2/ps1 titles (better than the 360's backwards compatibility with the original xbox)... so if this is true that they are doing this with just the euro ps3's it would be very odd indeed.

Why don't you keep your PS2 and play your old games on it?
I don't understand why they have to include PS2/PS1 compatibility and raise the price accordingly Why not just let the PS3 play PS3 games?

OMG!! Ripped off? You are buying a PS3!! Not a PS2.. Hence it is for PS3 games! You should just be happy if some of your old games work..

just to let people know where i seen this news, its in the google news section after typing in PS3 or playstation 3, many websites are reporting on this change in specification however i also have to say that although it's changed, they will try to add support through firmware updates available through the PS network.

I also feel that the comment about keeping my PS2 and using that to play them is valid but i keep all my games downstairs and having a PS3 and a PS2 together would only take up more space than i have to spare so i feel it's better to be playing them from one machine, my PS3 rather than having a PS2sitting there as well if my PS3 could play them.

Yeah, i am buying a PS3 but the whole concept of being backwards compatible was promised to us and as many of us have an extensive collection of PS2 games that we would like to be played on our PS3, after all, we were promised an extensive backwards compatibility with our PS1 and PS2games.

True, it still is value for money even without the backwards compatibility, but we were told we would have it, so why shouldn't we

Umm....there are people who are willing to get a few bucks extra by selling their PS2 in order to get a new PS3.

Default We had the same issues at first

Sony has made two updates to the PS3 here in order for it to play PS2/PS1 games and improve video output of these older games. Take it with a very small grain of salt. Even when we did have issues 90% of the games where not major titles. Sony will post on their UK sites the games that do not work just like they did here and I bet they will have the problem fixed in no time.

I have found that any bad news about Sony makes the headlines and any good news gets a small post somewhere. The media does what sells period, IE Anna Nicole Smith. She was not as important a Pres Ford and her death has more coverage than his did. I can not turn on a TV here without seeing that crap. After a year when the PS3 proves to be the system to own not a single news outlet, website or person will say we where wrong. Sorry we did not understand blu-ray or see the need for more storage.

Just do like I have done before buy the PS3, play the games that work. Wait for the update and play the ones that don't. I can tell you that after seeing the new games and playing them I have not really wanted to play the old ones as much.

@werewolk killer

Amen. great post.

Its kind of comical watching people jump on the hate bandwagon on this issue when they know it was an issue in NA, and was fixed with firmware within weeks.

I know at the moment it seems like real dissapointing news to me because they needed the PS2 chip to be backwards compatible but, HEY, maybe sony has managed to actually play the games using just the harware & software of the PS3 and now no longer need to use the PS2 chip they put in at first

This would be what i want to hear but untl i hear it from a reputable source, i can only say that i think we will not be able to play as many of our our PS2 games like the japanese or american PS3's do

NARMAK.

what your talking about is emulation. MS is currently doing emulation for xbox games to work on the 360, and we all know how successful they are with that (with a small % of games working). I would rather have Sony keep the chip in that they currently have if it means we could play all our ps2 games, rather than try and emulate it and come up short like MS did....

for price cuts they will need to remove the PS2 hardware chipset and replace it with software emulation. It has always been openly stated by Sony that they would go in that direction. The software emulation wasn't going to be ready in time for the initial launch so they had to put the PS2 hardware into the PS3. It had always been the intent for it to be software emulation.

It looks like the European launch will be the start of moving to software emulation or a hybrid that still reduces chipsets. Initially it looks like the backwards compatibility will be less than the N.A. launch - but it was just announced so I imagine it will take a few days/week to see what isn't compatible.

Remember they were only short on a few hundred titles out of a catalogue of thousands and thousands and of course the MS fanboys claimed the world was coming to an end and nothing actually worked. BC is pretty well complete now. IOW they delivered on what they said they would.

I am shocked that sony has already started the Emulation project within months of the system launch. That just goes to show you how die hard sony is about making the PS3 profitable. Sucks about that for europe, but i am sure the emulation will be stellar as time goes on. I am glad i have early US ps3's with the PS1/2 chips inside of it tho =)

They are not going to put the PS2 chipset in Euro PS3's. They are switching to software emulation for PAL PS3.

Thats why people think less PS2 games can be played on PS3.

They've been very on the ball with firmware updates and this will be no different for the European PS3's.

Hopefully the big plus from this will be that we can finally play those PS1 games from the Playstation Store on the PS3 itself without a PSP. Here is to hoping!

PS2 game support to be "limited"
Sony has changed the specification of the PlayStation 3 for Europe, raising doubts over the number of PlayStation 2 games that will be compatible with the next-gen machine.
"Rather than concentrate on PS2 backwards compatibility, in the future, company resources will be increasingly focused on developing new games and entertainment features exclusively for PS3," said David Reeves, president of SCEE.
Sony has said that 'a new combination of hardware and software emulation will enable the PS3 to be compatible with a broad range of original PlayStation titles, and a limited range of PS2 titles'.
Sony will publish a backwards compatibility list on the PS3's launch day, March 23, with additional titles becoming compatible through downloads via the PlayStation Network.
"The backwards compatibility is not going to be as good as in the US and Japanese models," a Sony spokesperson told Reuters.
Although Sony has yet to detail the new specification fully, analyst Datamonitor suggests that a new PS3 model will feature a "new chassis" designed to bring manufacturing costs of the console down.
"By utilising the latest hardware Sony is able to rationalise the number of components required," said the firm.
"This move is significant, as it will have a positive impact on the PS3’s long-term cost profile."
"By launching the PS3 in Europe with the new chassis, Sony has at a stroke removed one of the barriers to future price reductions, and providing it can make enough units available, Datamonitor believes there will be sustained growth in PS3 ownership as new users seek to benefit from the PS3’s enhanced features and functionality," said the analyst.
Sony was unavailable for further comment at the time of going to press.
looks like they removed the ps2 hardware from the unit, and it will be done the way the 360 does it, through emulation. Now this could be cool because it will allow them the opportunity to upscale the games, however it sucks because the list of games may be small.

I just found the link for the story on Game daily biz. I still think this is very disappointing news as I'm sure a lot of people but the PS3 for it's backwards compatibility with the PS2 games and for the convinience of having it all in one console.

And switching it to an "emulator"? Well that hasn't worked too well on the 360 with old xbox games... the M$ boys were touting full backwards compatibility, but have since quietly given up on that goal with a high percentage of xbox games still not playable on the 360. Still, Sony being Sony, I'm sure it will work a whole lot better...
