hi guys, i have a pair of 4 ohms front speakers, intend to get a centre speaker, can i get a 6 ohms or 8 ohms centre speaker? Understand i need to match front n centre, can i still go ahead without matching? thanks...

You want the center speaker to be “voice” or “timbre” matched to the left & right speakers. Impedance shouldn’t be an issue, as long as your amp/receiver can handle the different loads. Any receiver should allow you to adjust the levels separately.

Question though - have you tried the “phantom center” approach? I have, and prefer it to the conventional L/C/R set up.

I think he means hooking two centers up in series and placing one above and below the screen - and I forget the rest of his explanation of this witchcraft.

Phantom center means not using a center speaker, if your front speakers are placed properly they will produce a center image of a speaker.

That is correct. The front mains then do double duty as center & front L&R. The more I listen to this set up, the more I like it.

CRVNSN is right, although I've never been a fan of mixing speaker impedance loads. When I finally choose my fronts, I asked my dealer (and verified with the manufacturer) the proper centre speaker match. And that is what I bought. I bought my rear-channel speakers using the same principle, however it is less critical. As such, I have a full Totem speaker set-up.

Not a problem, it’s a contraction of my first & last name. Just call me Craig.
