Default Had to update Sony BDPs300/301

Second time.

First had to update with the 3.70 update to play 3:10 to Yuma. Worked fine after the 3.70 update.
Second update with the 3.90 update to play and watch the original Mummy (the oldest Mummy). Again works fine after update.

I quess the Sony BDP300/301 is one of the first Blu-Ray players. Is that the reason for the reaccuring problem???

Probably it was the seconds model released from Sony.

Blu-ray in general was rushed out the door to start gaining foothold against HD DVD. So, yeah, the firmware was workable, but not fully developed. I wouldn't complain. Back in the day you had to pull out an entire chip to update the firmware for PC's. Sometimes meant sending the unit for repair and not having it for days or weeks. Other products didn't have firmware updates - period. You lived with whatever you bought.

Sure, on the one hand it is a minor hassle to have to update the player. On the bright side, you get a better, and faster player with every update - FOR FREE.

4.20 makes me happy because they just nailed it. In 2 to 3 months I'll be itching for the next version. Some movies can still use major tweaking for load times. But it is a far better machine today because of the firmware. Mine was 2.0 when I bought it over a year ago!

I remember when I first got mine and tried to watch Pixar movies. It took several minutes to load. I am thankful for the update (for free) ability and have seen steady improvement with each one. No major complaints on my part. I get on Sony's page about once a month and see what version it is at and have them send me a CD.

Version 4.20 for S301 is really a definite improvement. Now I can wait until the holiday madness sales and grab one of the new players that can bitstream DTS-HD Master Audio. I want one with the build quality of the S301. More than likely it will be the Panny BD 35 if it gets released this winter with an unbeatable price tag. If not I will settle for the the BD 30. I can do without BD live.
