Default How are you mounting LCD/Plasma's on DRYWALL?

Moved my room around so now the LCD is on an interior metal wall rather than a wood-studded exterior. I've got Zip-Its that are supposedly good for 50lbs each in drywall and I've used them to hold my DVD rack for awhile, but my tv costs a bit more and is a bit more fragile.

How are you guys mounting yours on drywall?

What is an interior metal wall? Not sure I've ever heard of that before.

Then you would simply attach the wall braket to the metal studs just as if they were wooden, though you would use screws made for such. Don't even think about using drywall anchors!

Exactly - just would need the proper drill bits and screws. Drywall anchors!!!

That would be epic TV collapse - one I could never fathom imagining.

Well thats what I had in mind. I was hoping somebody here had a tv mounted on the drywall and could tell me from experience and whether or not their tv has lasted on the wall lol.

Alright. Finally found what I wanted. Toggle Bolts seem to be the trick. The smaller 1/8" will hold 50lbs "easily" they claim. Where the larger ones can "easily" hold 100lbs EACH. So putting 6-8 of those in my wall will make me sleep better at night.

yeah, using molly bolts, drywall anchors pr any other contraption that only holds onto the drywall itself should not even be in the mix. at all.

you need to mount it on those metal studs, which you can easily purchase screws for from just about any hardware store.

where are you mounting this that has metal studs? is it a commercial building or something? thats where you'll find metal studs most commonly.

Default Hanging Tv

I worked as a custom installer for Sound Advice in Florida, and we would use a heavy duty toggle bolt drilled directly thru the center of the sheet metal studs in four locations if you are using a fixed mount bracket, and the tv was under 50." If we were mounting a cantilever bracket, where you will be putting an increased loadon your wall then I would brace the wall interior with 2X4's horizontally between the metal studs.

If by toggle bolts, you mean these, then I would most definitely say NOT to use them. You do not want to have only the drywall holding your multi-thousand $$ set. You must attach your mount to the metal studs using appropriate screws as described above. Trust me on this. I'm sure others will chime-in with the same recommendations.

Mounted mine on the wall, but its in the wooden studs, not just the drywall. I looked at several differant mounts before I got the one I did and all have in big letters DO NOT MOUNT ON DRYWALL.. The one I got was from Sams, had a built in level and says it will hold up too a 65" plasma. It came with a wood and metal stud kit, as well as a stud finder. It went up without a hitch and has been in place for about a year now. It was $98 at samsclub if I remember correctly

Its a rather new house. All newer houses built in Florida are like this too. Its cheaper and MUCH faster and easier to build. Trust me, I build houses for a living.

I don't know man. Many places have said this is the strongest way to go, besides tearing apart the wall and beefing it up with 2x4's. I think perhaps I'll use those toggle bolts thru the metal studs.

Yeah mine was on an exterior wall where it was wood studs and it was like that for over a year, but I moved my room around now. I bought my tv mount from eBay for $14.99 and free shipping. Tilts 15deg in both directions and holds up to 250lbs supposedly.

I mounted mine on drywall and since my studs are too far apart from each other for a 32" LCD, I could only mount one side to the stud and had to use anchors for the other side. As long as you mount the screws directly in the middle of the stud on one side you should be ok since this will support the majority of weight. Then use the same size bolt anchors as the ones you mount in the stud. I used (I can't remember the official name) the ones that are a bolt that goes in to a long metal casing (same size at the bolt) and then as it is screwed in the sides spider out on four sides (as opposed to only 2 with the toggle bolt) and butt up against the inside of the dry wall. I have had no problems with mine being mounted in this way and is very sturdy.
