Last night, I was watching Gone Baby Gone and I've come to the point where I couldn't ignore the fan. I had my PS3 on for days in a closed cabinet a while back and it didn't get nearly as loud as it was last night playing the Blu-ray. I've noticed it keeps getting louder over time(since launch-day). A few months ago, it took many hours of play for it to start to get loud. It started screaming about 45 minutes into the movie. Are there any solutions to this? Is it safe to use an air compressor on it? What's a reasonable solution?

I would first and foremost take it out of a closed cabinet. While it might have been ok at first, could be that the toll of having it in there that long is taking effect.

And I havent looked up too much info on it, but I could have sworn hearing that blowing air IN to the system is a bad idea, because it might just cake up the dust even harder. Maybe try a fvacuum to suck some out first?

Others would be a better help in this situation.

It's been out of my cabinet since May. Even before then, when I ran it, I pulled it out so it could breathe. It has probably a good four or five feet of space above and around it.

Unfortunately thats normal for 60 gigs. Just learn to ignore it (it's white noise anyway), or buy a newer model.

Yeah, the 60's are louder- between the fans used and the large nm processor, it's a fact. However, while I'm not sure yours can do it, try googling "ps3 fan test"- there's a way to get some PS3's to do a fan test where they crank up on high, and it can blow some of the dust out of your PS3. I'm not sure the 60's can do it, but my 40 can.

I've heard that vacuuming can be hard on electronics myself, but I've done it. Compressed air could possibly knock some of that stuff loose- just make sure not to spray any liquids in it.

Not sure it's going to be something you'll be able to fix.

The problem is, it never was like that until just a couple of months ago. I'm not ready to get another PS3. What's the difference between the 80GB and the 60GB anyways, other than the software emulator instead of the built in emulation?

I might try compressed air. I was simply wondering if there was a quick fix or if using compressed air is the best solution.

I would try compressed air first. Just like computers, a good cleaning can help reduce heat and the use of the fan. Also the fan gets dusty too and makes it louder. I have done that to my ps3 and it helps, it obviously wont solve the problem, but it helps for sure.

You can use the can of air on it then use a low powered vac on it, like a dust buster. that will help get the dust all out and keep it quieter.

All 3 of my 60's can do the "fan test"!! DAMN that thing can BLOW!!!

I have never had a prob with any of my 60gig PS3's making any kind of fan noise, they've always been kept in the open & cared for like they were a baby!! So I don't understand these probs people mention , im sorry

Using a vac makes me very nervous. i used a vac on the fan part of my PS2 and it never worked after that. it was kinda my own fault as the suction caused the fan to spin rapidly in the wrong direction! Where would you use the can of air though, on the top vents? that would just push the dust further inside wouldnt it?

Please use caution if using a vacuum (especially if cleaning inside the PS3). Vacuums produce static electricity which can result in an electrostatic discharge. Such a discharge can permanently damage components within your PS3.

I'd suggest NOT using a vacuum. It isn't worth the risk.

I vacuum the cat hair/dust out of mine about once a month. I like to live dangerously I guess

Do you open it to do that? If so, it is pretty easy to open and put back together?

It's a genuine problem. It used to be in an area with very little breathing room and sometimes I forgot to dust therefore a ton of dust got in and on it.

Is it better just to unplug the PS3 and then vacuum or will it still pose the risk?

I need to try this. Ive noticed my launch 60gig goes into overdrive sooner and sooner as the months go by. Before it would only get loud after 4-5 hours of being on. Now its in overdrive after like 30min. Must by atleast partly due to my 3 cats (one of which sheds like 10lbs of hair a week)

Its gotten to the point where It drives me insane during quiet scenes in movies.

It will still pose a risk. It has nothing to do with the PS3 being plugged in. The dust particles rubbing against the vacuum hose or w/e attachment you are using generates static electricity. Similar to rubbing your socks across carpet or rubbing a balloon on your hair.

When discharged the high voltage has the potential to permanently damage components. If you want you can look up ESD (electrostatic discharge) on wikipedia to learn more.

doesn't matter if the enclosure/cabinet has 5 or 10 feet of space around it, it still needs a large opening or to be well ventilated.
