Lol! I hear ya. If you want all that advanced HD audio stuff, then you'll need a receiver (plus speakers) that can decode them.(5.1 or 7.1)

I understand what it is to be in need to understand something that seems unnecessarily complex. So let me help the best I can.

Lossless means that no part of the sound is lost in other words it's all there. Usually it refers to compressed sound which by definition has part of it removed in order to make it smaller. So compressed sound is supposed to be both smaller and with no part of it missing. All that is theory because if it was 100% accurate then there would be no difference between uncompressed sound (PCM) and lossless and if there was no difference then there would only be PCM as only PCM is truly lossless (since it's not compressed, all is there).
For you to get either, it must be mentioned on the Bluray specs and in order to hear it you need a Player that is compatible with that sound (which you will find in the instructions manual of your player).

TrueHD is one type of so called "lossless" sound just as DTS-HD MA is. Now these two sounds have a different name because they were made by two different companies so each gave their baby a name. DTS-HD MA (Master Audio) is an extra layer of DTS supposed to be better than simple DTS, and again to hear it you need a player that is DTS-HD MA compatible.

Bottom line: Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD MA and PCM are the best sounds out there and everybody will have a different opinion on which of those three is the best.
Personally I like PCM best because it's the only truly not compressed sound. But to be honest I challenge anyone to actually hear a difference between those three.

Oh and the 5.1 and 7.1 means that there are 5+1 channels (for 5 loudspeakers + 1 loudspeaker for bass) or 7.1 (7 Loudspeakers + 1 for bass) if you care to invest in so many speakers + of course the receiver that will send the signal to all those speakers.

There I hope this helped.

In addition to the link suggested above, read A Guide to Home Theater Audio Codecs. All the sound codecs and the cables you need are explained there.

There are times I find it difficult to tell the difference between Dolby Digital and Dolby TrueHD. There's always a delay when I switch from one decodec to the next by way of the menu. So, I just can't seem to break it down to the point of whehter or not it's really making a difference. Yet, I will say I like the sound of DTS HD MA and feel it just might sound better than the DTS core, but again, it's difficult to compare with one's hear by way of any switching and with DTS there is no such way to switch to the core directly. I agree that PCM is by far the best and I have a bad feeling its beginning to disappear in favor of Dolby TrueHD and DTS HD MA! While PCM is still showing up, it looks like the other two are becoming the standard. Of course, I don't have to worry, since I upgraded to a new Receiver and the DVD Blu-ray player.

Ok i spent the past 15 minutes reading over other forums on the site and from what i can gather ( help me out with this one ) this is the best option at the moment

What i am currently using:

Picture:
I have a BDP S300 player, i have the HDMI cable going from that to the tv (simple, thats the HD picture done and dusted)

Audio:
I have a Co-Axial cable from the BDP S300 going into the reciever of my Sony DAV-IS10 ( for the sound )

NOW..from what i was reading, Co-axial can only deliver PCM in 2 channels, so thats kinda shit. So what i am thinking now is to use this Mulitchannel Analog Audio option, the BDP S300 has these ports on the back but what i DO NOT know is does my reciever have the corresponding ports to connect the cables into?..

Coaxial and Optical cables can give you multichannel Dolby Digital and DTS Digital surround. If your player has 6 analog outputs (5.1) and your receiver has 6 analog inputs and it can handle PCM through its analog inputs, you can get multichannel HD audio through them. You need 6 analog cables to connect them. Read the footnote in the link I suggested above. It explains how you perform Bass Management when you use analog cables.
