Noob Question - Why do Blu-ray movies look so "real"? - Blu-ray Forum

Hello,

Recently I was able to purchase a PS3 and a small Sharp Aquos LCD (capable of up to 1080i). Movies look great, but I some displays in the store that blew my mind!

I was at a Sony outlet store today. I was checking out a new audio system when I noticed they had Transformers playing on the panel in front of me. The picture was extremely clear and didn't look like a "movie" but more like "live action" it was so clear! I have the movie at home but it doesn't look anything like what I saw at the Sony store. Best Buy also has a Samsung blu-ray setup that plays clips from Pirates of the Caribbean and it too looked like live action. It's hard to explain, but I'm sure you blu-ray fanatics must know what I'm talking about.

My question is, is this the difference between 1080i and 1080p that makes these movies look so "real"?

I know what you mean...They had the same feel as soap operas... I was also wondering the same thing. Transformers doesn't look nearly as good on my TV as it did in the store. I wasn't sure if I was just imagining things or if it was maybe the difference between blu-ray and hd dvd

Grain lovers, do your job and explain... but besides the grain and calibration issue, it could be a few things. If they are running it on 120 hz or motionflow, if they are not calibrated correctly or tweak colors and such...

What you're probably seeing is digital motion enhancement. It's amazing.

They also have the settings cranked up that will shorten the life of the tv.

What are these setting and how do I "crank" them?

Shorten the life of my TV? Great. Maybe my Best Buy warranty will actually do something.

It's the 120hz auto motion feature that's making it look so crazy good. I noticed the same difference you did, picked up a 120hz LCD and haven't looked back.

Yeah it's that 120hz motion crap. Every time I go to Best Buy and my Wife sees that TV playing Pirates she tells me how bad she wants that TV. I on the other hand absolutely hate it. I told her next time we watch a movie I'll press fast forward on our PS3 once and at 1.5 speed it looks Identical.

Agreed. Not sure why some people love the fake look of this, but they do. To each his/her own, I suppose. Myself? I'd much rather watch a movie the way it was MEANT to be seen, not incorrectly interpreted by motion technology.

Yeah, after seeing it I had to have it as well. Even though I don't use it all the time, I wanted the option to use it. Lately, I've had it on more times than not but there are some movies it doesn't mesh very well with. For example, it was causing artifacts galore in The Texas Chainsaw Massacre so I had to turn it completely off for that one.

yeah like people have said, in my experience several factors have helped the PQ look better:

(1) 60 hz v. 120 hz (much better)
(2) TV settings: i had my TV calibrated by certified person, looks 50% better than before. My "turn on" settings were good, but nothing like the calibrated ones.
(3) make / model / type of TV. You'll hear people say Pioneer Plasmas / Samsung LCD's blow away the competition.

I know exactly what you guys are talking about but to me it looks odd. It does look like a soap opera and that's the problem. Soap operas are shot on videotape, not film.

I just like for my blu-rays to look like a movie, the way there were intended. I like the HD pop and crisp picture of course but not that auto motion stuff.

To each his own I guess.

Best buy had 3 42" phillips lcd tv's up front at the checkout,they were running a side by side compairison of HD and SD. first! i dont even know if that SD video was really SD.maby it was upscaled but then whats the point? when these companies said they were going to be doing this in the fall i thought they ment side by side with a SDTV and an HDTV. second! the HD video comparison was using the 120hz feature, why would they use that? i guess it would be easier for the jp6 to see the difference,but i would rather them use 2 separate tv's 1 SD 1 HD playing the same movie side by side.

I realize I'm in the minority on this site, but I love the 120hz automotion feature. I love that extra prop it provides, though I only choose to watch it on certain things. It looks bad on broadcast HD and SD, but with movies like Spiderman, the auto motion looks very nice! it just depends on what you're watching, what your personal preferences are, etc. AT least with the 120 hz tvs, you have the option of turning off the motionflow technology for those who wish to watch a film without it.

I'm with you. I love that automotion stuff. On most Blu-Rays I set it to medium and just have a blast. The clarity is astounding. As for HD, I have found that setting it to Low on primetime broadcasts really works well most of the time. The same can be said for old VHS movies as well.
