less than 10 minutes from Akihabara
Default Akira coming Feb 24 for $49.98

http://av.watch.impress.co.jp/docs/20080926/bandai.htm

Contains both English dub (probably the newer one) and subs. The Japanese TrueHD track will also be 24bit/192kHz, which I believe is the first of its kind for a movie (I assume there might be music releases in 24bit/192kHz already).

Sucks you can't get the old English dubbed one anymore. However at least it will have the subtitled one on it as well. Cant wait to see this.

Awesome. I don't care about the english track. They can just skip it as long as I get a good Japanese audio track. Seems there'll be two Japanese tracks:
  • TrueHD 5.1ch (24bit/192kHz)
  • Linear PCM Dolby Surround
Guess that should do it. I hope they also clean up the picture, like they did with the Gundam releases. It seems they'll be re-using the HD remastered version which aired on HD Tele-cinema in Japan.

Video will be encoded with MPEG4

The discs will have both Japanese and English subtitles (yay for the Japanese subtitles! ).

A special first edition set will be sold, which will include a BD and DVD version (sold for a bit over 10,000 Yen)

I wonder if they'll keep the exact same specs for the US release.

Note for those who aren't used to seeing "Linear PCM Dolby Surround": This will be a 2.0 track with Dolby Surround for use with Dolby Prologic (II(x)) and not a 5.1 or 7.1 LPCM track. It will likely be the original theatrical audio instead of a downmix of the newly mixed 5.1 track, similar to other Bandai Visual releases.

No, that's actually what the original release was going to be when it was first scheduled for July 2007 (and then indefinitely delayed). This re-scheduled release will be 8000 yen in Japan and will only have the Blu-ray disc. There is no mention of a limited edition, etc. in the article.

So far, Bandai Visual's Blu-ray releases are always the exact same discs when they're released to the US, they're even made in Japan. The packaging will be slightly different, though.

I don't think this should have been moved to the Asia subforum. It's an official US retail release, not an import (at least not in the sense that you will have to buy it online or from a specialty store).

Oops, my bad, I read quickly through it and didn't notice the 予定だったが part. You're absolutely right.

As long as they use the original poster artwork, I'm a happy camper:

http://www.impawards.com/1990/posters/akira.jpg

If there are no extras, that'll be a bummer. I'll just keep disc 2 from the original special edition tin and put it in a new double-disc blu-ray case.

Sooo... is this ONLY in Japan or also in US? Cause usually Japanese discs cost more.. a LOT more. But if I have to, I WILL import this.

Also... I am so jealous you guys can read that much Japanese. I took 2 years of Japanese language class and I don't know anything! I feel like I might as well have just been asleep in those classes cause I can barely remember the first thing about it anymore.
I plan to go back and take more, and maybe someday going to Japan. I just wish I could turn on an anime or a movie in Japanese and leave off the subtitles. Or pick up an import manga and start reading it. Someday...

This movie is kind of overrated in my opinion and definitely not worth the $49.99 price tag.

Umm...I'm fairly certain my DVD has a spectacular 5.1 mix of the new English dub; why is the English only listed as 2.0? And as usual, Bandai Visual's Japanese-like pricing is absurd.

I agree...I have seen a great deal of Anime both series and movies and though there is not necessarily anything wrong, it does not deserve the hype it gets. However, that said, the $50 still beats the price for Ghost In The Shell.

ANN says the English track is in 5.1.

And the reason it gets so much attention is because it was the first entry into anime for many in the mid-90s.
