Default Jet Li fans: Unleashed / Danny the Dog Mini Novice Review

Some of you are probably already aware but Unleashed, AKA Danny The Dog, is available to import from Japan. It is region free so it will play here in the US.

Distributor: Sony in Japan (Universal/Rogue Pictures is the original distributor)

Specs: 2.35:1, 1080P/MEG4 encode, Dolby TrueHD 5.1 audio (HD DVD version is 1080P/VC-1 encode with Dolby Digitial 5.1 audio)

Subtitles: English & Japanese

Film itself: The story is a lacking yet entertaining, but the real reason I admire this film is for the fight scenes. I think the choreography/fight scenes in this film are the best yet of any English made Jet Li film.

PQ: 4/5
IMO it's a good looking transfer that has it's limitations because of the way it was filmed. Definitely not reference material but good nonetheless. Sharpness and detail look great especially during the closeups. If you've seen the film then you already know the colors in the this film look unnatural and surreal and are intended to look that way. Most of the scenes have this bluish cool tone to it and the whites are somewhat overexagerrated. The whole film has a sort of desaturated look to it but the colors are surprisingly still bold and vibrant. There is a very fine trace of grain that's consistent throughout the film that gives it that theatrical and gritty look. This is probably bad news for you grain haters. The only time I found the grain to be somewhat bothersome was during the scenes in Bart's (Bob Hoskins) office and in Danny's (Jet Li) holding cell. Overall it's a solid looking blu-ray and I'm happy to own it.

AQ: N/A

I don't have the high def audio system that most of you guys have and living in an apartment has its limitations. I'll let someone who has a better audio setup give their opinion on this.

Bonus Features: Making of the film featurette, How a piano works featurette, Interview with Jet Li, Music Video, Choreography of each fight scenes, Trailer, Outtakes, & 2 Deleted Scenes

Anyone else who owns this BD, please feel free to give your opinions.

TrueHD 5.1 nice.. considering the Universal version on HD DVD is DD+ 1.5...

I can't help it.. this movie was really bad. I am a huge Jet Li fan. The story, acting, and dialog was a big cringe.. and sometimes laughable. Even Morgan couldn't save it from sucking.

I agree the movie had it's corny moments, but the fight scenes are great.

Well it is still good to see Jet Li movies coming to HD. I would love to see his older Chinese movies re-worked. Even some Chan would be awesome.

I would have been happier if Sony had given the unrated version instead of the theatrical version.

A very high bit rate AVC encode. Black Levels may not look that deep due to the unusual filming style.

Sony has tied up with EUROPACORP and Asmik Ace Entertainment for Japan release of Blu-ray. This Blu-ray is taken from the French master similar to Transporter 1 and 2.

The DVD comparison is available here

Unrated version is on blu-ray and i cant believe that they put 6.1 Dolby TruHd audio track on it

I think there is some confusion here. The extended version is 112 mins and the theatrical version is 103 mins. Whatever is available on Jap release is the theatrical version. The extras too seems to be the same.

I confirm the Japanese version is the theatrical version. I own the unrated DVD version as well.

Well it's distributed by Sony in Japan, but here in the US it's distributed by Rogue Pictures which is a division of Universal. So I'm guessing whenever Universal jumps on board the Blu wagon? However, if I'm not mistaken, the Japanese version uses a different encode (MPEG4 & TruHD) than the HD DVD version. So the real question would be when it is released in the US, which encode are they going to use? If I was a betting man, I'd say the US version would be similar to the Universal/Rogue version since they would be the one's distributing it here in the US.

So, is the Japanese disc the European cut, I.E: The same as the French and Hong Kong and NOT the U.S. version with the atrocious CGI piano end sequence?

I've asked this before but have not received a reply.

Can anyone explain why these movies ( Unleasehd, Beowulf, Starship Troopers) are released overseas, but they don't see the light of day in the States?

Why don't the movie companies release these in thier own backyard?

Any links to other threads that explain this? I've tried searching.
