Exclamation UJ-210 question

I was thinking about getting this drive to add to my HTPC since it can only fit slim drives. But I was worried that they're might be problems with it going from made for laptops to be working on my HTPC...

Also Whats the different between Drives like the UJ 210 and actual blu ray players that you buy at stores?
Thanks in advance!

ALSO: Right now the my video card connected through an vga cable.... would this be ok to play blu ray or should i upgrade it to a video card with hdmi?

Laptops and desktops use the same interfaces. There aren't any "laptop only" or "desktop only" interfaces.

The difference between BD drives and BD players is that with the drives you can burn to Blu-ray as well as having a wider backwards compatibility with various formats.

Funny that this topic should be brought up, as I'm selling my UJ-220 on eBay right now! Interested?

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...=tab%3DSelling

VGA is an analog connection and has much lower quality than both DVI and HDMI. If you don't have either DVI or HDMI outputs on your video card, you should definitely upgrade it.

very cool thanks! I'll look into getting a new low profile card... any suggestions?

Also does the uj 210 / 220 use upconvering on regular dvds like the players you buy at stores do?

i was looking into the 210 just because its cheaper and with my budget i need to get the bluray drive and a new video card if it wasnt for that i'd be all over that 220 or 225 !

What video card interface does your motherboard have? AGP or PCI-Express? What's your budget for a video card?

Blu-ray drives require software to harness their Blu-ray playing ability. Corel WinDVD 9 Plus Blu-ray plays Blu-ray wonderfully and also has an excellent DVD upscaling feature (with optional motion enhancement) called All2HD. Highly recommended.

Oh, and how much are you looking to pay for a Blu-ray drive?

It has PCI-Express. Right now i'm using a sappire x1600 that has vga and hdmi on it but for some reason my hdmi hasnt been working.. i think the resolution is maxed on it. Also the computer itself is a Dell XPS 210. That i've added a new processor added 4GB of ram and a 500GB hard drive but i'm not positive if the computer itself can get the max resolution... right now its running at 1360 x 768

Also is it not possible to play blu ray discs in vista media center?

well for the drive I found a few uj210s on ebay from $270 - $335 +shipping

as for the video card max probably $120 for a low profile hdmi card that can handle this stuff.

Also I heard something about HDCP compatability... how does that work?

One of these two video cards sounds like what you're looking for.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...=Low%20Profile

Nope, Windows Vista is not Blu-ray ready. You need to have a third-party program to play Blu-ray on a computer.

HDCP (High-Definition Content Protection) ready means the video card has been set up to transmit the protected Blu-ray data elsewhere. It's not an issue with modern video cards; they pretty much all have it.

I'm willing to sell my UJ-220 for $350 with free Priority Mail shipping. How's that sound?

Nice! Considering the only $20 price difference and that both are way under your max price, I assume you went for the Radeon HD 3650 512MB, right?

Oh, and make sure you get the Blu-ray software as well. Definitely gonna need that.

Here's the official page for Corel WinDVD 9 Plus Blu-ray:
http://www.corel.com/servlet/Satelli...2&tabview=tab0

And here's the listing on Amazon:

Fortunately, optical drives don't need any drivers. Just shut down, install, turn on, use! Makes it a whole lot easier.

What exactly do you mean by DVD library? I wasn't aware that Vista Media Center kept track of the DVDs you own, just thought it played them.
Anyway, this may help you. It has a list of other stand-alone media center programs. The ones from Pinnacle and Nero caught my eye.

Cool

Yeah in Vista media center if you back up your dvd movies onto your hd you can set up a dvd library of all your movies in media center its pretty freakin cool. What sucks is that so far its the only media center that works for me because i'm on Vista 64bit ... but i recently found an article that teachs you how to add powerdvd or windvd to run with vista media center rather than work separately. Thanks again!

Great! Glad you've found a lead for the media center.

You're welcome, and thank you as well!
