Overall the Playstation 3 is the best HDTV movie player and videogame system on the market today. There have been many positive reviews of the Sony PS3 by many magazines. What is disappointed is the average consumer is getting confused by all the negative misleading comments on some websites. I spoke with a person the other day that thought the Sony PS3 machines were all broken and did not work correctly with HDTV displays. In reality I informed this person that the Sony PS3 machines are not broken and are working as designed. Some websites have misleading information about the PS3.
**PS3 scaler issue** Let’s see if I can make it simple for people to understand without getting to technical. The Sony PS3 will output 480I,480P,720P,1080I, and 1080P. 99% of Hollywood BLU-RAY HDTV movies are encoded at 1080P/24 on the disc which is the highest quality available for HDTV. Some videogames on PS3 are encoded at 720P/60 and 1080P/60. If a 1080P movie or video game is played on the Sony PS3 the Playstation 3 will correctly with no problems output 1080P or give an option to down scale the image to older displays that support 1080I, 480P, and 480I. For some reason maybe to save cost the Sony PS3 will not down scale to 720P. The downscaling feature works fine with the Sony PS3 at all resolutions accept it was not designed to support 720P when downscaling. Sony decided to save money and not include a hardware upscale feature in its Playstation 3. Many HDTV displays already have upscale features built in that will take a lower resolution signal and convert it to a higher resolution. Here is where the problem occurs, when people with very old HDTV displays that only accept 480I/P or 1080I/P signals try and play a videogame that is 720P the only way to be able to play the videogame on a very old HDTV display without a upscaler is to have the Playstation 3 down scale the 720P HDTV videogame to 480I or 480P quality. It would have been nice to have an upscale feature in the PS3 but it might have raised the cost $100 for a good quality one. As I mentioned before the PS3 does not currently upscale video resolutions that is a feature that most HDTV displays sold in the last 3-5 years already do. The Sony when down scaling 1080P or 1080I only down scales it to 480I or 480P and does not support 720P when down scaling. Only BLU-RAY games that are 720P will be outputted as 720P or if one selects down scale they can down scale 720P to 480P or 480I. These issues are generally for people that have a HDTV display that is 5 years or older with no scaler built in. Any HDTV display purchased in the last 3 years should have a scaler built in. Scalers can be found on cheap 27 inch CRT HDTV TV’s at Walmart for $349. I am sure Sony wishes they would have placed a better quality video scaler in the Playstation 3 so that people with older HDTV displays don’t run into issues. The fact is all old HDTV displays will work with the PS3 but not always in HDTV quality, sometimes only at NTSC 480I or 480P quality. Another issue people are complaining about is the software emulation of PS1 and PS2 games instead of hardware emulation for the European version of the Playstation 3. I know that if I was buying a European version of PS3 I also would want a hardware emulator for old PS1 and PS2 games. Another one of Sony’s cost cutting decisions. Overall the Sony PS3 is a great value and quality. If the PS3 did everything everyone wanted it to do the thing would cost $1,000 or more. It is estimated that Sony is losing $200 or $300 on each console they are selling and hopes to one day make up the difference in videogame sales. Here is detailed reference to the Sony PS3 no hardware upscale feature. http://www.beyond3d.com/articles/ps3scaler/ Here is a link to a review of the Sony Playstation 3 BLU-RAY videogame/movie player. One can even purchase a wireless keyboard and surf the web with this thing. Incredible product http://www.soundandvisionmag.com/hd-dvd-bluray/1982/sony-playstation-3-game-console.html |
