Default Dts-HD or DD5.1

I am confused on this entire format thing. What format should I be listening to? I only have 5.1 but should I set the BD to DTS when available or DD? Which is better and why?

DTS-HD said uncompressed. What exactly does that mean?

What about Fiberoptic or HDMI for audio? I'm sure HDMI is better, but will i notice a difference? I have 6.1.

You cannot get multichannel Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, DTS HD HR, DTS HD MA, SACD, and DVD-A through Optical cable. You need HDMI or multichannel analog cables. Optical will only give you the lossy Dolby Digital and DTS Digital Surround. Please read the the link mentioned in post #3.

Sorry, but that doesn't mean anything.

DD is much more efficient, the same way MPEG4 is over MPEG2 in the video world.

BD also uses the 640kbps data rate, which is more than a match for DTS.

Even in the DVD world, DTS @754kbps also rolls off frequencies above 15kHz. DD has flat response to 20kHz at 448kbps.

With all due respect...should his screen name be "Sound Freak"?

Smile Sound Format

Dts-hd And Dolby Truehd Are Esentially The Same.

However If Your Receiver Is Capable Of Decoding Dts-hd Master Audio, Looseless, Or Un-compressed Formats Are Much Better, But Be Careful Not To Damage Your Speakers. Most Speakers Can't Handle These Three Higher End Formats. That's Why Everyone Is Having Problems With Their Center Channel. To Make Use Of These You Are Supposed To Have At Least All Three To Four Way Front Speakers.
The Audio Masters Think That If You Have The Money To Buy The Right Tv, Receiver, And Player That You Have The Speakers To Go With Them For The New Formats, But Most People Don't. Speakers Matter The Most. You Can Be Playing A Movie In Normal Dts Or Dolby Digital Vs A Guy With One Of The Three Higher End Formats And Still Have Yours Sound Better Because You Have Better Speakers.

Speakers Matter The Most, Don't Buy Bose. It Just Cant Handle It.

Oh, And A Movie Is Only As Good As The Microphones That Are Being Used, Bad Positioning Of A Microphone Leads To Bad Sound Coming Out Of Your Main Speaker ( The Center Channel ).

Thanks,
Nas

So if you are using optical, do you recommend PCM or bitstream? When I use Bitstream, my receiver shows LFE instead of SW(PCM). What is Better?

Bitstream because you wont be able to use any of the advanced audio codecs.

Dolby TrueHD sounds the same as DTS-HD MA, which sounds the same as PCM. Why should he select DTS whenever he can?

The answer all depends on your setup and equipment. If you are capable of decoding and listening to the HD audio codecs, then you should always choose them over standard DD. You say you only have 5.1, but what does that mean? What BD player and AVR do you have and how are they connected?

Does your receiver not accept audio over HDMI? If it does (not pass-through), then you should use HDMI and set your PS3 to PCM. If not, then set to bitstream as mentioned above and use optical.

Does not have the option for HDMI, so I use optical.

Gee.....That's funny, my BOSE speakers sound awesome with DTS MA going through them.(I bitstream my 350, to my Onkyo 805.)It handles them just fine....and I play them REALLY loud all the time! Nener had any problems at all with distortion, or clipping. So........try again my friend.

P.S. as a new member, you might want to be careful with the Bose thing.....cause' lots of folks use them and enjoy them. This site is not for product bashing, and the whole "Bose" subject, could get you into trouble........believe me, I know.
