There are several stickies and other threads dedicated to this topic, but in short, Blu-ray stays true to the OAR (Original Aspect Ratio) of movies. You will still see black bars (called letterbox) on the top and bottom of the screen on movies that were filmed at a wider ratio than the ratio of an HDTV.
There are no options for removing them, as they are suppose to be there, and are a good thing. Without them, you are cutting off the sides of the image. You may also see some black bars on the sides of some movies (called pillar box) because they were made with a more narrow aspect ratio. Do a search for aspect ratio and black bars and you will see tons of other threads on it. Here is the sticky on it: https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=5528 Last edited by CptGreedle; 09-22-2008 at 06:49 PM. |

Here, here. I have converted so many friends over the years that would buy full screen DVD's. They thought they were seeing the whole movie. When I showed them the difference they were blown away at how much of the picture they were really missing with full screen. The dreaded words"this movie has been formatted to fit your screen" There's a great section at The digital bits about the differences between widescreen and fullscreen.

burn in takes like 8+ hours on plasma's these days dude. i know of no movie that is 8 hours long! I have a plasma and watch movies all the time and have never even had a sniff of image retention and especially not burn in. So many people are mis-informed about burn in. yes it can happen but only if you are reckless

Why are you even asking this... its an HD version and one of the properties of HD is widescreen. Now, if you're thinking about a fullscreen that's 16:9 (instead of the old 4:3), then no- although most films are made in a ratio very close to 16:9, so it'll fill up your entire screen. But scope movies are all done in their OAR.
I think for the time being, and hopefully forever, the closest thing to a pan and scan blu-ray is anything IMAX (which is cropped from a 1.44:1 to a 1.78:1 ratio), but that's it. |

If the black bars did it, then most likely it is image retention. One of the best ways to fix it is to put the set in "torch-mode" and insert the DVD Ice Age. Program the DVD player (or Blu-ray) to run it on a continuous loop for 12 hours. That will fix the problem over time. If it is bad, you can access a diagnosic white wash that might help too.

It's an oversimplification to say that every Blu-ray title is released in the original aspect ratio. I can think of a couple of exceptions:
Justice League: Season One - The 4:3 version was designed to be matted to 16:9 for HD presentations such as BD, but unfortunately the BD is presented as pillarboxed 4:3. Lonesome Dove - The general consensus seems to be that the OAR is 4:3, but the BD is reformatted to 16:9. Also, like jceperley mentioned, most IMAX BDs have a modified AR. |
