Lightbulb widescreen/fullscreen

Why can't studios put the widescreen/fullscreen option on one disc and let the viewer choose which one to view when hitting "play" on the main menu? A lot of people where I work have a hard telling the difference between which is widescreen and fullscreen.

Why waste time with a movie that doesn't represent the director's intent? Full screen is an abomination and I'm glad that it's essentially gone.

Sure, if you're watching SD-DVD on an SD TV.

I agree too! I always hated when I could not get the DVD in widescreen and was stuck with a fullscreen disc. You lose 25% of the picture when your crop up a widescreen movie into fullscreen, dont see why so many people prefered watching full screen

If you want full screen, buy VHS. When you go to a theater, you don't get a choice between fullscreen or widescreen. Imagine watching Lawrence of Arabia in full screen. The movie was shot on 70mm film and it is extremely wide. I taped it many years ago on my Beta machine. It looks baaaadddd!!!

While I didn't like it, I think people preferred watching full screen because they didn't like black bars and/or they had a small screen to begin with, so full screen was the better choice for them.

That said, full screen has no place in this day and age of HDTVs. If you have an HDTV, you should be watching the movie in the correct aspect ratio and not a cropped full screen version, IMHO.

There are some DVDs out there that have this option. Couldn't tell you which ones, but I know I have come across it at some point. I've seen some that have wide on one side and full on the other.

Bottom line is that I've never believed in full screen, but I did at one point understand the generall publics preference, but that was in the 90's. At this point, with 16x9 TVs there is no reason for full screen production of movies.

In addition to that, the words "full screen" and "Blu-ray" should never be in the same sentance!

I think that's what he means.

But all BDs should be OAR only.

For DVD it was a waste to make two different versions for Full or Wide, I love widescreen and always have...even payed more on VHS to get the Widescreen version.

Believe me, I hate fullscreen because the picture is too focused on one thing. The studios have put both versions on 1 disc before and they make it so hard to tell which is wide and fullscreen and it annoys me when customers come up asking "Is this wide or fullscreen?"

Question Why Does this Thread Exist?

Pardon me, but the name of this site is: Blu-ray.com

Why are you asking a question that only deals with standard DVDs?

Go to Standarddvd.com to ask those silly questions.

All High Def movies are wide screen.

This question just does not belong on a Blu-ray site.

Do you mean 4:3 fullscreen (pan-and-scan) on a regular TV or 16:9 fullscreen of a 2.35 movie on an HDTV?

I've been working for many years to convince customers and studios that widescreen is better. We had quite a battle in the early days of DVD to convince studios to make anamorphic widescreen titles. The beauty of Blu-ray and 1920x1080 (widescreen) displays is that pan-and-scan could finally be put to rest. Consumers would no longer be confused between the two because movies would finally all be displayed in their original aspect ratio and pan-and-scan would be no-more.

It would waste too much space to have a 1.77:1 "full screen" version and another version in a wide ratio like 2.39:1 on the same disc.

Even if a dual layer disc was used each version would be too starved for bits to have great image quality (much less still have room left over for high quality surround sound and various extra features).

The black bars on 2.39:1 ratio movies are still pretty small when shown on a 16X9 ratio HDTV monitor. I think the "fool screen" fans just need to get used to those small black bars when watching super-widescreen movies.

That is going to be the irony. Having dealt with a decade of people whining about letterbox on their 4:3 sets, now we'll have many of the same people whining about side bars on their widescreen sets.
