Patton on Blu-Ray - Worth upgrading from DVD?

This question is for anyone who has seen or seen parts of Patton on Blu-Ray as well as on the Two-Disc Collector's Edition that came out in mid-2006. They look to be the same version. Is the PQ and AQ good enough to justify upgrading? Thanks in advance.

Hellz yeah... I havent seen Patton on DVD, but the PQ is great on Patton.. Look like it was shot yesterday! The colors are great.. An easy recommendation

I think you'll find many people disagree with you.


Colors are great, but the DNR was really heavily applied here. My suggestion is to give it a rent- fine details are completely gone.

This movie has been the subject of much debate on these forums along with The Longest Day for the blatant and excessive use of Digital Noise Reduction.

The consensus seems to be that for smaller displays this transfer is acceptable, however larger displays will show the obvious nature of this discs flaws.

It is obviously better than the dvd.

From what I've heard the DNR on Longest Day is really bad, I've chosen not to even rent it because of that.

Patton on BD looks good. I think there is some DNR plus remember that it was shot on 70mm (there shouldn't be much grain from 70mm). It looks very good IMO, much better than DVD.

Then it might be cause I have a small display.. I have a 32" (sit close though) and I think it looks great! But the version I have is NOT the American one.. Mine is the Scandinavian version, and I thought it sucked cause it barely had any bonus features, but maybe they cleared up the picture, if there was any problems with the US one.. To me, its 100% clear

I have a calibrated 60" SXRD and at 1080p/24 Patton looks great. Yes, it's been DNR'd and is missing some very fine detail, but it's still a HUGE improvement over the SD DVD.

great movie very well done some of the scientists here didn't like it but I did much MUCH better then the dvd all depends what your looking for

Thanks for all the responses so far. As far as what I'm looking for, I guess I imagine most on the forum are in a similar situation as I am. I own a ton of DVDs (400+) and when buying movies constantly am faced with the question of is it worth it to upgrade my copy of a movie to Blu-Ray if I already own it on DVD.

If you can rent it first that might be the best choice. For me, the Blu ray is much better than the dvd version and I think some people spend way too much time scouring each and every frame looking for a stray pube or a spec of dust that ultimately ruins their viewing experience. Until something better comes out (which I doubt there will be a reissue) this is as good as it gets (which ain't bad at all).

Patton on Blu-ray is totally worth buying. Maybe it could have been better but it sure looks great as ai.

Yeah..... I have about 1,200 DVDs, so if it's a catalog title, and I'm considering buying it on Blu-ray... 99.9% of the time I already own it (sometimes multiple releases of it) on DVD.....

Patton, In my opinion..... is a DEFINITE upgrade to blu-ray..... (or addition in my case, as I don't get rid of my DVDs when I purchase their blu counterpart)

patton looks beautifull the haters are just hating for the sake of it everything they pointed out (from screenshots) on AVS about what you lost in detail is actually there if you watched it

grab it for sure!

This is a case where the "haters" appear to be right. There's no lost detail that's "actually there". It's been scrubbed quite a bit.

It's by far the best presentation of the movie currently available. It's not a perfect recreation of the original by any means. Is that enough for you? Up to you to decide I guess. That's why I personally suggested renting it first. I would never blind buy any movie anyway.

well if you read what i said i was pointing out the screenshots of "lost detail" in the tiring AVS thread about the release.. everything down to the "Stars within the Stars" is noticeable when you watch the video and are not comparing stills

True enough. AVS members are too anal. However I do agree with them on this particular title (to an extent).
