I have a STR-DG910 I baught in August and have been pretty happy with it so far.
I recently upgraded my speakers to the Aperion Intimus series. Trying to calibrate the receiver for these speakers I learned that the settings for this on the DG910 are much to be desired. Learning of the new release of the Yamaha v663.. I was wondering if it is even worth upgrading.. I already know some of you will say yes.. I have the Sony hooked up to my PS3 via HDMI and the Sony accepts 1080/24p and multichannel True HD via PCM from the PS3. I baught the Sony to upgrade from an older Yamaha receiver HTR-5740.. I did a lot of research when I baught the Sony and was cheaper than the Onkyo 605 I also was considering.. But hearing some issues of the Onkyo I decided to go with the Sony.. So basically the reason I am asking this question is I almost feel as though I am short changing my new speakers.. So maybe upgrading to the new Yamaha may do them justice. I also have been looking at Pioneer Elite receivers and Denon... I don't care if the receiver can decode the new codecs.. Soon the PS3 will be able to decode DTS-HD anyway... Just as long as the receiver can accept the signal via PCM like the Sony can.. Anyone with more experience with this type situation woud be great... I am still a receiver Noob in a way. I never had experience with any other brands but Sony and Yamaha.. When I upgraded to the Sony it did sound better than the Yamaha I had.. But will there be a bigger difference coming from the DG910 to a newer receiver? Maybe I will be better off with an older model Denon that can accept PCM and do 1080/24p. I have also been looking at the Pioneer's which seem very nice also... My budget will be maxed out at 700... and that is way more than I want to spend... Any thoughts or opinions will be much appreciated. |

Overall audio quality, the Yamaha will do justice for your speakers. The Yamaha uses Burr-Brown DAC's which by itself is a big advantage.
My suggestion? If the audio sounds good to you with the 910 then keep it. If you can afford the 663 and don't mind going through all that trouble to upgrade, then the Yamaha is desirable. I would love to get my hands on one. ![]() |
