Just saw an article on www.psu.com saying that there will be a limited number of PS2 games that will be able to be played on the PS3.

Indeed, sony has always said that the PS2 chipset inside the PS3 is completely temporary, and that they were going to go with emulation all along. It is shocking for it to happen so quickly, but supposedly the emulation is very good and there are screenshot from PS3 dev kits showing 1080p upscalling with 4xAA for PS2 games (final fantasy 12 was shown). Also it will allow you to play the PS1 games you download from the Playstation Store on the PS3 itself. So its not all 100% bad. I am curious myself to see what the percentage of games are supported.

yes, the near future is all about software emulation, and on PSU forum there are some screen shots already. Dont fall for the FUD that things are mess up for the European launch, its more like Sony is constantly improving on the PS3 support for backward compatibility. I think Sony is doing a good job, just not enough communication and PR.

I wonder what happens if you have an original PS3 with the PS2 chipset. Do you get the benefit of emulation and 1080p upscaling when available and the benefit of the chipset when emulation is not an option?

Do you actually have a link to these screen shots as i'm very curious to actually see proof that they have actually done that, it would certainly be great if it is true, an epic game like final fantasy 12 sure would be great to experience in high def, but i'm also curious as i though it was not possible to upscale actual PS2 games running from a disc like that.

Thumbs up PS2 Games on PS3

I can only speak for one game so far (Call of Duty 2), but it looked awesome on my PS3. Granted, I did switch from a PS2 on composite cables hooked to an OLD sony 41" SDTV to a HDMI-to-DVI cable into my not-so-old sony 50" HDTV, but nice nonetheless. Can't wait to try GTA:SA

I always thought that putting a ps2 chip inside a ps3 is better then software emulation, but you can improve both with updates. Ken confirmed before the launch of the ps3 that ps2 games would not be upscaled, but that might change with an update and if even sony fans want to see it happen. The idea of going with emulation instead of a chipset would be to cut down on costs which seem like a good idea.

Just remembered I found those FFXII shots. Their true beginnings are still a mystery however, it wouldn't be the first PS2 game to have a high res media release.

Sony has made it clear that european launch of PS3 will lack the PS2 emotion engine processor to reduce cost of PS3. All it means is that Sony hs found a way for Cell to emulate the emmotion engine, however it's a possibility that some obsure PS2 titles will not work on the UK PS3s, but I am pretty sure most titles will work. I am not sure if they plan on removing emotion engine on future PS3 revisions world wide. But if the PS3 can play most PS2 and PS1 games, who cares?

Xbox 360 has backwards compatiblity issues, more so than PS2. You don't see Xbox 360 fans complaining. Xbox 1 is dead in their eyes.

However there are a lot of timless Ps2 classics, unlike Xbox titles, which have an ever shortening lifespan.

I did a search but couldn't find anything, so here it is: a read somewhere that even though PS3 games are code free, PS2 games are not. That would mean I cannot play a European PS2 game on my US PS3. Can anyone confirm this? I don't plan on getting any PS3 games soon (don't have the time to get involved) but I would really like to go back a few decades and play R-type again It's out on PS2, but amazon.com doesn't deliver games to Europe. Any info on this is appreciated.

I believe they will be doing the same in the near future. Can't remember where saw it but pretty sure that's the case..so if you still feel more comfortable with the built-in hardware..get one soon...

About 95% sure it still respects the regional coding for DVD's, PS2 games.

That's too bad. I hate buying this kind of stuff through ebay. It's way too expensive most of the times (after some horrendous shipping charges). Oh well, what one does for a bit of vintage feeling

It wasn't that bad after all. Just bought R-Type final for 9.99 plus 12.99 shipping on ebay
