Default Why did you update your firmware to begin with?

I would like to know what barrier you ran into that made you update your firmware. Or did you do it because it was suggested.

Was it because you could not access certain extra or functions on a particular BD or because you could not play the movie, at all?

Please be specific with the name of the BD and/or which function you could not use before updating your firmware.

thanks

I update because COD4 requires firmware update for online gameplay.

For faster load times and Dolby TrueHD.

Also, I want to be sure my player will play all movies.

What firmware are we talking about??

My PS3 firware gets upgraded cause it adds features, LOTS of them, it stabilizes problems, which I've also seen, and made it a MUCH better machine!

I understand that, but did you hit a wall with a movie before updating your firmware did you do it "just in case"?

thanks.

I'm looking for a situation where someone refused to update the firmware and then could not play a movie.

I do not consider the need to update firmware a "barrier"

It doesn't matter if I am updating the firmware on my BR player, my iPhone, or my laptop BIOS. I update the firmware for all of the above products because issues get fixed, features get added, and stability gets improved.

It is not a "barrier" when manufacturers improve their product.

[EDIT:] I am usually very proactive about getting the latest firmware, the only time I was blocked by firmware was when I needed to update the firmware on my S300 to play "V for Vendetta" .

Solely because I wanted DTS-HD MA. I upgraded to Bonus View and BD-live only for show, as I rarely use them.

I understand. I'm just trying to see how long the S 300 can play movies without "having" to be updated and if it can do that forever, possibly.

if someone buys it with no need for the extras and simply wants to put BD's in and watch them, can they do that with a simple BD player and not run into a snag eventually?

It's my understanding that the above is true and the S300 will be a viable player for years to come. It is the primary reason why I went with a stand-alone player without a NIC instead of the PS3.

While I will agree with the PS3 fanboys that the PS3 is among the most "future-proof" players available... it wasn't for me for 2 reasons:

1) I already have a 360 and the games I enjoy are on that platform, I really can't stomach the handful of uninteresting AZN games that are PS3 exclusives.

2) While BD-Live is kind of a cool concept, it's really just unnecessary ******ry. I'd rather that the studios focus their time on providing lossless audio and flawless transfers.

i updated bc would not play certain movies. then following updates for smoother running and more features like dts ma for the paystation 3. i am a ps3 owner and lover plus... some bd's like pirates of carribean have issues running over time unless you update. cars is another that takes forever to load before firmware updates.

AR190G, VAIO Updates - I installed *ALL* of them - 3 of which were drive firmware updates.

This one, AR730E/B - no firmware update needed so far.

Both have the latest player software(s) so all BD features do work.

Firmware updates are, by design, always improving the functionality and efficiency of the electronic device that it is created for. Regardless of whether one "hits a barrier" or not with their player, it is still a good thing to do!
