Default PS3 Freezing Problem... HELP!!!

Well I just encountered my first PS3 problem. I popped in Madagascar and it froze about 15 minutes into the movie. I then exited to the main menu, took the disc out, and tried again but the same thing happened (only this time sooner). Does anyone have any idea what could be causing this problem? I must say I have been using my PS3 more than ever lately. Not sure if it could be an overheating issue. I'm praying I don't have to send it in to Sony or replace it, but that may be the case. Any insight into this issue is appreciated. Thanks guys.

could be a couple of things. might be overheating but it could also be that your laser is going out.

was it a blu ray or a dvd? does it happen on other movies or just that one?

It was a blu-ray. It happened for the first time earlier today on one blu-ray, and then again tonight on a different blu-ray.

Alright I'll give it a shot. What would be the issue if the DVD worked / didn't work?

If it is the laser can I have it replaced anywhere locally? Or am I stuck sending it off to Sony?

Thanks a lot for your help..

if it happens with the dvd as well, it will not really narrow it down, it could still be a laser problem or it could still be a over heating problem.

If it does not happen with a dvd then i would be fairly sure it would be the blu diode laser going out. in regards to repairing it...is it still under warranty? if so just send it back to sony. if not someone locally to you might be able to repair it. there are people here in oklahoma that i know of who can do this and the parts are readily available on ebay and the like as well.

Gotcha. Well I'll give it a shot and see what happens. Thanks again for the help. I'm hoping it was just overheating. There was also quite a bit of dust built up around the console so I got that taken care of. I guess I'll have to just cross my fingers and try again in the morning, lol.

did you not have your original sales receipt? if you did then sony will not have charged you to look at it. if you have your receipt you will have no problems with sony fixing it for free under their warranty

Well it's the laser that is starting to go bad. I found a guy locally that can repair it for $145 ($90 for parts). Is there anywhere online I can pick up the parts I need? $90 seems a little steep.

That's a good reply to all the - "you should have bought a PS3" comments you hear. All equipment will eventually break or get worn out. On craigslist in P'cola there's a PS3 80gb for sale for I think $140.00 - needs a new laser also.

If it's the older 80GB, that's a good bargain IF the only thing that is broken is the OPU. All that you need to do is send it to SCEA and get them to put in a new drive and specifically tell them not to mess with the rest of the components (unless they are not working).

Why don't you contact SCEA and ask them how much it would cost to replace the PS3's BD drive?
