BDP-S350 won't play DVDs

I just bought a Sony S350 to replace a DVD player that died and in anticipation of getting an HD TV in a few months. For now, i am using it with the RCA video jack on a non-HD TV. When playing non-Blu Ray DVDs which is most of what I have, however, the video goes in and out randomly switching to a blue screen and back to a full picture. Some non Blu-Ray DVDs seem to play ok, but most don't seem to.

Do I have a defective unit or is there something I can do, or are there compatibility issues I don't know about?
