Default Blu-ray DVDs will no play on BDP-S301

I have a Sony BDP-301 DVD player. Recently I purchased several Blue-Ray DVDs (Dark Knight, Wanted, HellBoyII, Hulk, Narnia, and Iron Man). Iron Man played great with no hitch, but the others will not play. They load and then show the FBI warnings about copying and then go to the menu screen. I press play while the arrow points to PLAY. The player displays POWER ON then goes back to loading, FBI warnings, then the menu screen again. I press play again and it repeats the above again. My Firmware Version is 4.30. Can anybody explain what the problem is?

I would exchange the player, since I see no reason why those movies are not playing.

I agree. There should be no setting that you would have to change for the player to play the other Blu's correctly when you know one disc works with the format. It's more than likely a bad player. The only thing that would cause the problem would be the BD-J. Since this is an older player the recent firmware may not be updated enough to play the newer titles since they were all released after the firmware. All the other blu's, with the exception of The Hulk have been released within the past month.

Man, they are not called Blue Ray DVDs!

The name Blu-ray is derived from the underlying technology, which utilizes a blue-violet laser to read and write data. The name is a combination of "Blue" (blue-violet laser) and "Ray" (optical ray). According to the Blu-ray Disc Association the spelling of "Blu-ray" is not a mistake, the character "e" was intentionally left out so the term could be registered as a trademark.

The correct full name is Blu-ray Disc, not Blu-ray Disk (incorrect spelling)
The correct shortened name is Blu-ray, not Blu-Ray (incorrect capitalization) or Blue-ray (incorrect spelling)
The correct abbreviation is BD, not BR or BRD (wrong abbreviation)

Bottom line is that we all, in fact knew what he meant. People need to learn to be a bit more tolerant of others who make errors in their representation of BD. The OP joined our forum on Dec 13 and this was his first post. Is this any way to welcome him to our group?

He was just correcting him. Since the OP is new, he need to be taught right at the start the correct way. That is the best way to learn. That is one of the purpose of this forum: to educate people. Why do you get offended
If we don't tell him, who will? He will go on and teach his friends and families the same mistake, and all of the sudden; we will have 15, 25 and more people in the street calling a BD:blue-ray DVD and the player blue-ray DVD player.

I simply get offended with the anal-retentive, hateful attitudes of people.

I had a similar problem with the BDP-S300 after applying the 4.3 firmware update. A few of the movies I had problems with were:

Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest
Kung Fu Panda
Indiana Jones: Kingdom of the Crystal Skull

One difference is that the movies would play successfully after an automatic restart of the player. All of the above movies played fine previous to the 4.3 update. Since the player was still under warranty, I sent it to Sony in Mt. Pleasent, PA for repairs. They returned a refurbished unit about twenty days later. The refurbished unit had the 4.3 update and it played all the above movies fine.

You may want to contact Sony tech support for help at this point. They'll have you try a few standard things to fix the player (resetting it to the factory defaults, reinstalling the firmware update, etc). If those things don't work and your player is still under warranty, they can arrange for service. If your fortunate enough to have a Sony certified repair facility in your area, you can drop it off there. Otherwise, you'll have to ship it to the nearest service facility. Once the facility receives the player, it can take up to ten business days to service it. They had mine five business days.

Good luck.
