Default Polk R50s

A few months back I went to Fry's to browse around and I walked out with what I thought was a pair of Monitor 50s, at a great price of $59.00 each. I was comparing speakers in their audition room and they sounded really good, regardless of price. The Fry's guy said he was picking up a pair for his fronts. Well, weeks later I noticed when I saw pictures of the Monitor 50s that they had the silver on the sides and the distinctive "feet" of the Polk Monitor towers, unlike mine, but I figured that mine were just a different "trim style" or something. Well, I finally looked at the back label and lo and behold, they are R50s .

As near as I can tell, the R series were Polk's entry level speakers back in 2000, with the R50s being the top of that line. The two drivers are 6 1/2" (like the Monitor 70s I have up front - and yes, they are real Monitor 70s ), and the tweeter is 3/4" compared to the 1" tweeters in the Monitor series. Of course when I realized this I started freaking out thinking that I had to run out and get some Monitor 50s to replace these, but then I remembered how good they sounded compared to speakers costing 5 times as much. So I guess I'll just chalk it up to serendipity - a happy error.

If you are on a budget and you get a chance to pick some of these up, they are really cheap now that they are such an old series, and the sound can't be beat for the price.

Fry's has those for killer prices pretty often now.

Great speakers for a price that you can't beat.
