Default Polk R50s as Surround Speakers? Overkill?

I recently bought a pair of Polk R50s as front speakers, but now I am buying a new home with a dedicated theater. I am going to upgrade to RTi10s for the front speakers and was wondering if the R50s would be good to use as rear surround speakers? Are they too much for just surrounds? WOuld they be better used as front speakers in the living room and have some getting a different set of surround speakers? Thanks for the help!

Dedicated home theater and overkill in the same sentence? I think not!

So I'm guessing they would work as well as speakers DESIGNED to be surround sound speakers?

the only difference would be the space a floor standing speaker takes up, and perhaps reverb.

They would probably even do a better job than a small speaker, but because surrounds are not in use most of the time they would not get pushed hard. Now, if you were to listen to music (surround modes) that is where it would really shine.
