Default 2 questions. One receiver and one speakers..

I believe some of the most knowledgable people are on this site when it comes to Home Audio. I want to upgrade my surround sound starting with my receiver. I don't want to spend more then a grand on a receiver. I want 7.1 or can someone tell me if there is something else coming out thats going to be better. I want it to be HDMI audio. It sounds like you can't beat that.

Then on the speakers I don't want to spend more then 500 each. I'll be buying them 1 at a time over a few weeks time. I don't mind spending a little more on a center and a subwoofer. Whats the best I can do for the price I want to spend.

Thanks

Look at the Onkyo 805 for a receiver. For speakers, check out these and these out for some ideas for fronts.

Shouldn't all your fronts and centers match, or is that more BS that was just fed to me from BB?

Oh no those aren't matching. They're just some ideas. But you should match at least your fronts and center.

Read your post wrong.........you're planning on $1,000 for speakers.

Forgive me, it's early and still not awake yet.

For receivers I'd seriosly consider the Yamaha RX-V1800, which I beleive you can get for about $800 USD.

Well about 500 each for all the surrounds to. I don't mide paying a little more for the center and the sub if I have to.

Paradigm Monitor 11 - $1199 Pair

Paradigm CC-390 Center - $599

Paradigm ADP-390 - $390 each And you could go cheaper with the ADP-190's

This is the sub i'd go with either in the 10" or 12". The 12" is around $1000 though so you might want to look at the 10"

Paradigm UltraCube 12 - $999

And then go for an Onkyo 805.

All this would be an extremely well put together system. And I don't think anyone on hear will tell you to stay away from Paradigm. Their cost to performance ratio is unbelievable!!! Here is Home Theater Magazines review on this system:

This sub is a bit over $1000, but it offers way more performance over that Paradigm.

Im not disagreeing but I just have a couple questions...if its an 18inch woofer how musically accurate can it be? I mean to me I dont see how you could get clean tight bass or mid level bass from a woofer that size. I just know from experience that the larger the woofer, you miss out on some of the middle to high level bass and a tight clean sound. I mean sure its going to put out unbelievable lows being 18inches, But I just don't see it being very musically inclined (not rap music) like classical and all around? I have always thought that a 12 inch sub is perfect for an all around sound experience. But really any input or help would be appreciated. Thanks

Elemental Designs makes some of the best subs around, with all of them being engineered to have the best results. The box is what can kill any good subwoofer if it's not made properly, which may explain what you're talking about. They also sell 15" if you're more inclined to stay smaller.

I'm not an expert by any means, but if I were buying speakers right now I'd be buying these

Fronts - KEF - iQ9 - on sale for $449 each right now

Center - KEF - iQ6c - on sale for $350 right now

Surround - KEF - iQ8ds - on sale for $399 /pair right now

Sub - HSU VTF-3 MK3 - $699. Can add a turbo charger to it for $100 currently, though I did see it on sale a few weeks ago with the turbocharger for $729

I see I see. Well I have no preference in size...My neighbors below me probably would like the smallest to no subwoofer but I don't care what they think. I was just curious about the size to bass performance. But when I do upgrade my sub I will be going with 2 of them to place in different parts of my room.

But then again the mid-higher level bass can also depend on the capabilites of your front speakers, depending on what you have the cut off freq. at and so on.

I was just wondering though about ED, It just sucks I can not hear or demo one, because I don't like to recommend or voice my opinion on something I've never heard. Also they have just never appealed to me because along with great sound looks are pretty important to me (I know I am crazy). But then again these are just my preferences.

Are you focusing solely on Theater, or do you want a "musical" system as well?

We have a local audio shop whose main focus is Paradigm audio and I must say that although they sound good, for the same price range you can do a lot better.

A few suggestions you may want to look into are the Kefs above or:

Axiom Audios Epic 60 500 set:

http://axiomaudio.com/epic60_500.html

Monitor Audios RS6 AV setup:

I would have to highly disagree with that, which is totally fine cause you have your opinion and I have mine. I would also recommend B&W over both those brands for the price also too. But then again I would stand by Paradigm over any of them. But everyone is going to give more praise to the speakers they own, right?

I actually almost bought a full set of Paradigm, when it came purchase time and I had my 4000.00 saved up it all came down to 3 brands, Paradigm, Monitor Audio and B&W 600 series.

The Paradigms, after I got over the condom looking woofer I could appreciate the warm sound they had.

The B&W's where just not an option, I drove out to Calgary <2 hour drive> to audition them and they where a big disappointment, the high freq on them make you cringe.

The 700 series was a lot nicer but it just wasn't in my budget.

The Monitor Audio had a nice clear sound, great high freq but a very fast and punchy musical bass to them.

In the end it all came down to Paradigm, the Monitors or doing an in home audition of the Axioms.

I guess we know how it ended

Yea no worries. We all have our preferences. But of course my preference in Paradigm would be the S8's like my dad has...so I guess that makes my love for Paradigm even more.

You know, eD has a new finish for most of their subs now. It's glossy black. See the difference...
