Question Collectors VS Renters !

I have been on the Collector side regarding blu rays since I bought my PS3 July 2007! At that time the High Def war was in full swing. I thought it my duty as a good blu ray warrior to buy as many blus as I could to smoke the red ants back to their holes. Now that WE won the war that objective has clearly changed.

Furthermore, my local Blockbuster did not have a blu selection at all. Until NOW So, my rental pursuit started out with a bang. Renting several blu rays over the weekend.

With the markets and banks going to hell in a handbasket I can now enjoy several blu rays for the price of one! However, the collector side of me still loves to gaze upon The Collection ! And save up for new A/V equipment !

Question: How do you guys feel about the rental vs collector side of our hobby ?

I have decided to rent more saving my money only for the big blu ray sets like Planet of the Apes and other future releases.

What say you ?

renter here for sure. 90% of the crap that comes out of hollywood is barely worth watching once, let alone owning it for multiple viewings. I will only buy a BD I know I will want to watch over and over.

I only buy the movies I reallllly love (or sure that I will), and for the rest, I rent them throught ZIP (canadian netflix).

I will not double dip my DVD collection (maybe only LOTR).

For PS3 games, I only buy them (rarely rent), but again I'm pretty much selective in my choices

I was definitely a collector with dvd, but I'm a bit more selective with blu-ray. I still buy a lot of movies, and I will pounce on a good sale, but with dvd I owned a bunch of movies I never watched and they just took up space. If the Redbox at Wal-Mart near my house got blu-ray I would rent a lot more. Don't understand why Redbox hasn't embraced blu-ray yet.

I buy. The way I look at even, even at blu-ray prices, it's still cheaper than actually going to the movies and much more enjoyable. Then I have a nice collection on hand when friends and family come over and want to watch a movie. Those that I truly don't like, I trade in at the used movie store for credit towards other new and used movies.

Collector. I can't remember the last time I rented a movie. I know the kinds of movies I like.

Definite Collector... only really feels expensive for games though, not so much blus.

This should have been a poll.

Anyways, I am as much a collector as one can possibly get. I care for the total package. Cover art, disc art, menu design and of course PQ and AQ are all important factors for me when it comes to Blu-ray.

I'm a collector. I only rent movies that I'm not sure about.... but if I like them, then I'll buy them too.

I rent.

I rent around 40 movies a month using Blockbuster Total Access ($34.99 plan). I don't have cable and I rarely buy discs anymore. It is a no brainer considering the costs involved. I never run out of content either.

i've just started cataloging my dvd collection so i can shell it all out to reinvest in blu-rays. I've been buying blus like crazy the past couple weeks here though, before the end of the year i'm hoping to be in the 100+ range

I'm at 78 now. That is why this renting biz is quite new to me.

I was a collector of laserdiscs. Now I'm stuck with over 600 of them and the wife wants the space and is willing to throw them away. I was a collector of dvd's, and I'm stuck with lots of them. I'm trying to be a lot more choosy about Blu-rays, so I only have 43. I try to rent from Netflix those movies I want to see but not buy. I know that doesn't support Blu-ray as much as buying, but I hope Netflix is buying enough to make Blu-ray a success.
