Default Samsung BD-P1500 vs BD-P2500

All right, I'm having quiet a bit of debate on which to get... maybe you guys can help me choose.
  • I Don't really care about Internall Decoding for HD audio(I have an Onkyo 805)
  • I don't really care about DVD playback being Outstanding!(HQV chip) but do care about BD video play back .. Which is better, or are they the same?
  • Is the 1500 really that bad? I've read alot of negatives but it seems they were based on past players.

I need help from owners of these players. I've done research on both but I still can't decide which to get? Obviously the 1500 is a really good deal now, but the 2500 sounds like it would be the better choice? help me decide.
thanks!

I work at an electronic retailer. I know both models very well. The only difference is really the HQV chip, which you don't care about and the 7.1 analogue output which you probably don't need since I guess you have a HD capable receiver. Concerning the BD Picture there is really no difference at all. The two points I mentioned are the only differences. I had both models in my showroom for quite a while and I can tell you that the 1500 is a great piece of machinery. Go for the 1500. The 2500 is only of interest to people who either want to play back DVD's in better quality or don't have a new receiver and need the 7.1 analogue output.

Thanks Stephan!! that helps alot... so does the 1500 do 7.1 (via HDMI) for those movies that have the DTS-MA 7.1 tracks? I guess I think it would be a plus if it did, but I'm not going to die if it did not.

+1

Differences are Reon chip and analog outs.

P2500 is the winner!!!

Without a doubt, it dominates P1500.

Through bitstream, the 1500 does do 7.1. I do not know why it is listed that it only does 5.1, but at least through bitstream, it definetly does 7.1. I checked on Pans and on The Doors and both light up 7.1 and those back surrounds are on.

I thought that too, but due to pricing, the 1500 blows the 2500 out of the water if you already have an AVR that decodes the HD codecs. The Reon chip will improve SD playback, and I have retired most of my SD's, but on BD playback, the Reon will not give you a noticable difference on 1080P material.

I took the plunge on the Samsung 1500, I've owned the P-1000 before, I didn't like it but I knew the consequences of owning a first pass Blu-ray player... anyways I'll give sammy another try. Thanks for all the help guys! plus, a player for $150 is not a bad price.

Yep, since I guess you have a receiver that can handle bitstream input, you can take the 1500..

If you don't have a receiver then what type of Bluray Player do you NEED?

One that decodes all the various codecs?

Sorry but I'm trying to get a player for my dad and I know he doesn't have a huge AV system there. He just has a tv and he needs/wants a player that will play his huge DVD collection that is good enough for him right now.

So I need to know what method results in the best picture and sound....

Bitstreaming or Decoding?

And what Samsung player would you recommend for his setup? And last but not least I know that you need to have this connected by ethernet to take advantage of the BD Live but my problem is that the wireless router my dad has is on the 2nd floor and the player will be the 1st floor.

How do I get around that?

I owned a 1000 and just picked up a 1500 via Amazon as well. Can't beat the price and since I already have a PS3, this player should be a decent secondary player.

To enjoy the HD Sound the Receiver must at least be able to handle an HDMI Signal. Not just passthrough but a repeater. So that it can read the Sound from the HDMI Signal. Then you have 2 choices. You either let the player decode the sound. Most players can't decode DTS HD Master (They all can decode True HD Nowadays).. Only the Panasonic 55, I am not sure about the 35 can do that. I will get back to you on the 35.
The other way would be to send the signal in bitstream and the the receiver decodes it. Only new ones can do that like the onkyo 606 or the Yamaha 663.. Sorry.. I just checked. The Panasonic DMP-35 can Decode DTS HD Mstr. internally. So that would be already. All you have to make sure now is that your dads receiver can read HDMI Signals.

He doesn't have a receiver...that's my point.

He just has an HDTV with relatively good speakers. I'm not sure what sound it's capable of playing.

My main question is this. If he only has a tv would he able to take advantage of movies that encoded with Dolby TrueHD, PCM, etc.... if the Bluray player is connected directly to the HDTV? And if that's possible do I want a player that decodes or bitrstreams?

OR is that complete nonsense and the ONLY way to hear the lossless audio is to have a A/V receiver?

Keep in mind that I will eventually buy him a decent A/V receiver. I just don't have the money now. But I do need to get him a player soon and it might as well be Bluray just in case Bluray does take off.

The only way that you can enjoy lossless is with an AV Receiver. I assume you are connecting the Blu-ray player to the TV with HDMI? If so, the best he can expect is 2-ch PCM. If you aren't connecting with HDMI, then you need to make sure the player has 2-ch output (Red and White connection). I'm not sure if the Samsung 1500 has that or not, but you can check at a store. The benefit of getting a player that can bitstream is later on, if desired, you can get a receiver and speakers to enjoy lossless audio.

Thanks zman2k2. Great explanation. I really appreciate it.

Anyways I went ahead and got the Samsung BD-P1500. The Matrix Trilogy deal is AWESOME.

And later on this Christmas season I'll get him a nice A/V receiver and maybe an upgrade on the HDTV.

I just got a job at Best Buy so I'm very excited about that and the discount is gonna make things a long more affordable...lol.

I'll probably be getting the Panny BD 35 for myself later on. This holiday season is gonna be nuts I think.
