Exclamation Sony 820...What did I do wrong?

PROBLEM:

Just hooked up my new 5.1 system and receiver (see sig). Speakers are working fine (did the auto-cal and it came out perfect), but I have no display on the TV (TV, PS3, Wii...nothing). Everything is connected to the receiver, and the receiver is connected to an HDMI port on the TV.

Anyone have any ideas?? Thanks.

Most receivers have an 'HDMI Monitor out' that must be turned on (or off depending on manufacturer)...

N/M...found that error, but I have another.

I set up the TV/Calble as the "Satellite" input, as there was no component for TV (we have HD w/o HDMI). However, when I put the receiver to "Sat" nothing shows up on the TV. Any ideas about this?

Not on the Sony.

Are you in the HDMI output?

Can you output analog over the HDMI on the 820? I thought it was only on the 920....

You might have to use the component out.

That's what I did. I used component out of my cable box, and then component in to my receiver via the Satellite ports, but I'm getting nothing through that set-up.

Or am I just getting confused? How else am I supposed to get HD TV?

What I am saying is you would have to go from the output on your cable box to the input on the receiver and out the component out on the receiver to the TV. That or run straight to the TV. I don't believe 820 outputs analog over HDMI.

Edit:

Yep, no upscaling to the HDMI out on the 820

Oh, OK. So I need another another set of component cables to go from the receiver to the TV? Will I be able to get surround from cable that way (I know if I just go from the box to the TV I won't)?

Its weird though, because I am getting TV audio, but no picture.

While we're on it, the Wii isn't working through the DVD port. Is that also the reason why? Will that also have to go through another to-TV connection?

This is a little annoying, as people on here told me the only think that needed to be connected to the TV was an HDMI. Everything else goes to receiver...

Well, if you had the 920 or a HDMI cable box you would only have the one cable. You are probably using optical for sound from the box, that is why you have audio. Only video is sent over component.

If the Wii is output over component, you will only need the one set from the output. If you have it hooked up composite, you will need to run a composite out as well.

From what I read of your AVR, it does not upconvert component/S-video over HDMI. This means that you will need to run additional cables from your AVR to your set. If you can run component from both your cable box and Wii, then you'll just need a set of component cables (and L/R audio) to your set. If you are running s-video from your Wii, then you'll need an additional s-video connection from the AVR to the set. Other AVRs will allow you to input different connections in and output everything over HDMI, but the 820 does not.

Three more questions:

- Having to run component, does that mean surround available via the TV will not happen? I assume it won't, since I'm 'stuck' with L/R audio.

- I have Comcast. If I upgrade to DVR, they provide an HDMI box. Would I be set then?

- While we're here...my sub cable only has one terminal at the end, but the sub has a L/R RCA input. Can I put the cable in either slot? And will this 'lessen' the sub performance versus having a Y cable?

Thanks for the help everyone!

instead of buy more cables, send the receiver back and get the 920. You will only need the one HDMI out to your TV. So much nicer.

You can have Prologic surround over L/R audio.

Yes, except for the Wii. You will get Dolby Digital with it too.

Put it in either slot, you don't need a Y cable.

Thanks for the help everyone!

or you can use optical out from your cable box if available.

For that particular input, yes. Wii's not having HDMI outs will limit you to having to connect to the tv as you connect to your receiver

I'm hearing more and more about it not mattering which one, but on the subs I've owned they always recommended the "left" input. You can pick up the "y" cables pretty cheap if you're concerned.

If you can find it for a good price, this is a good option. I have it and love it, I only paid $350 for it too...

+1

It seems like you'll be a lot happier if you get a receiver that actually does A/V switching.

I'm fine with the 820. We were thinking of upgrading to DVR anyway, and the Wii can go in the bedroom when we get a nicer TV in there. )

Thanks again for all your help! Going to watch Iron Man as the first surround BD tonight! )
