So my parents bought a blu ray player and didn't use it until 8 months later. When they try to play a movie it doesn't work and they find out they need to update the firmware. So they download the file but when the player is updating they think it isn't doing anything so they take out the disk and turn it off.
Now the thing says Need Disk - Incomplete whenever it is turned on. They were updating it to version 4.5 when that was new. I made the 4.9 disk and have tried everything to try and get some response. They apparently called Sony and they said that it would have to be repaired. My parents got a new player since the repairs would cost more than the new player, so I have this thing to play with. Does anyone have any ideas, besides I'm screwed , in order to fix this machine. I can take it apart or whatever you want, because this thing is just a giant paperweight right now. ~Thanks, John |

Here is a shot in the dark....: Do a HARD reset : "Hold stop button and power down for few second" Insert up-date firmware cd ....close ....pull the power plug immediately ... Power back on in afew minutes .....Hopefully it will recoganize the disk and load it ..This time ...leave it alone ...take a nap or something .... Untill you see " DL OK " then you'r done .... If not ....You'r really "SCREWED" ......sorri. |

I just tried that, and nothing changes. As soon as it starts up again after I inserted the disk it gives the incomplete / need disk message again.
Does anyone have any other ideas? Could I fix it at all if I opened it up? |

considering it's less than $250 listed on Amazon.com I think your parents are lucky they didn't get a really expensive player. these are the unfortunate dangers we are warned about when it comes to updating firmware or doing BIOS flashes. Hopefully, for the next time, your parents have learned that they really need to have paitences when doing those updates and depending on the machine they really do take a long time (some up to 30 minutes) also hopefully, they will call you and ask you to do it for them! I think you should just chalk-it-up to a slightly expensive learning process. It is not worth the investment to fix and I think at this point too much has been invested in the frustration factor. Let it go & move on.
Hope i wasn't too blunt but I don't think it's worth the time or aggravation. imo. best of luck to you. |

You mentioned your parents were updating the player to firmware version 4.50 when the disc was initially taken out. The player never finished updating the firmware and it sounds like it's looking for that disc. Try reinserting the disc with the v4.50 firmware and see if the player will pick up where it left off.

If you still have the original 4.50 firmware disk that might make the difference in doing the update. Might be a slight difference in the sectors. Also try unplugging the unit and press the power button to drain the electricity. Might help.
Other than that, it's in the hands of Sony now. Probably have to pull the chip, or use special reset hardware. Last edited by tron3; 07-31-2009 at 01:19 AM. |

If a firmware update wasn't completed you would need to use that same version to complete the process. Other versions will not work. You could always try the other firmware releases to see if maybe they used another version. Unfortunately, it looks like Sony removed all previous versions from their ftp server. In order to try the other versions of the software you'd need to find someone who still has those firmware files. Otherwise, as tron3 stated you'd need to send it in to Sony or have a repair shop try and fix it. |

If you want to try one of the earlier versions and you have some sort of online storage that I could upload them to (they are WAY too big to email), PM me. |

i prefer ordering the firmware discs from sony - hardly takes a week.
if someone has a disc for v4.50...try your luck with that the FAQ in teh instruction material says : put the disc in - shut down - power on - it should pick up where it left off... once you are done, i would suggest you upgrade to 4.90...and next time..order the discs...dont burn them. |
