Default PS3 Aspect Ratio Help (Sorry if this has been asked before)

Hi. As you can tell I'm new here so please forgive me if this was the wrong forum to ask this in. I just figured since I was a newbie I'd ask it in here. I also tried to look around to find an answer but I figured I was better off asking. Here's my problem (or it might not be).

Tonight I decided to pop in my Dr. No Blu-ray for the first time in preperation for Quantum of Solace. Thankfully I have not experienced any problems with watching the film itself (knock on wood) like some people have reported on other players. But while I was watching the film I decided to pop over here to check out the review of the disc. I noticed thanks to the pictures posted with the review that the film when properly viewed has black bars on each side of the picture since the film's aspect ratio is 1:66.1.

Well I noticed on my display (42-inch Widescreen Sony) that the black bars don't show up as prominently on my screen as they do in the capture. They're there but they're not as wide. As a test, I just tried A Clockwork Orange on another TV (32-inch Widescreen RCA) in my house on an HD-DVD player (Sorry. I've learned.) since it has the same aspect ratio as Dr. No. The picture on that seemed to be correct in comparison to the screenshots taken from the review.

The film looks fantastic and the image is sharp (people have said these are the best the Bond films have looked, when they work, and it's true), but I just want to make sure that I have it set correctly because if it's wrong, does that mean I've been watching all of my Blu-ray films incorrectly. If so, how do I go about changing the settings on my PS3 so the film is displayed properly? Might it have to do with TV size? Or am I paranoid and it's proper to begin with?

It's not the PS3. It's your TV. It's called overscan.

Basically the TV zooms in a bit on the video from ALL sources, including broadcasts. The way to check if your TV has overscan is to use a Sony Pictures Home Entertainment BD. From the MAIN MENU, key in 7669 on the remote and then ENTER. On the SECOND screen (The first screen is a color bar screen) you will see a sine screen filled with bars and lines. Pause playback and see if you could see the tip of the triangles at the bottom and top of your screen. There are also triangles next to "1.78" on the right and left of your screen.

Most probably you can't see the tips of the triangle at the top, bottom and sides of your screen. Hopefully you can see the full address of the company listed there.

I'm not sure why but that's not working for me. I inserted my Close Encounters Blu-ray and did what you said but when I hit enter nothing happens. It's like the player isn't accepting the numbers, but it'll accept when I hit enter. It usually just starts the movie.

I tried another way by messing around my menu options and I found under my "screen" option a setting for display area. The setting "full pixel" seemed to fix the problem, but whenever I switch inputs on my TV the setting goes back to "normal". I'm not sure why it keeps doing that.

I don't have CE3K. Try another SPHE movie with no BD-J.

I don't know. Maybe it's built-in. See if you can scour the net for the Service Manual for your TV to see if you can set Full Pixel permanently.
