That is how it should be if your TV is 16:9

Correct, 1.85 or 1.78 also know as "FLAT RATIO" in theaters is THE NEW "FULL SCREEN" on 16.9 HDTV's. Everything is AOK!!!

On a widescreen tv that's 16:9 1.78.1 and 1.85.1 don't have big black bars. On a 4:3 tv it will. If you have a movie that's 4:3 on your widescreen tv then you get black bars on the sides instead of top and bottom.

I think you guys misunderstood the OP's question.

He is wondering why there are no black bars when viewing 1.85 material on a 1.78 screen. There should be very small bars, but most consumer TV's (especially CRT displays) have the edges of the image cut off to a slight degree, this is called overscan.

On my CRT HDTV you don't see bars on 1.85 or 1.66 material either, and I can't do anything about it because that's just the way the TV is.

I think I know why - some Warner movies which have an OAR of 1.85:1 are actually presented on the Blu-ray as 1.78:1, ie. no black bars at all, I think Paramount also do this. Studios like Disney, Universal, Fox etc on the other hand preserve the 1.85:1 ratio hence the small black bars.

if your TV has 1 to 1 full pixel mapping setting you will see a tiny black bars on top and bottom. I know mine shows it, you can see it on some bluray movies and I see it on MGM HD, love that channel they show the CORRECT OAR on ALL their movies and I see the tiny black bars.

My Samsung has a "Wide Fit" Aspect Ratio setting when connected through HDMI, and that eliminates any overscan, and all movies automatically show on the correct setting.

Generally, if it's a rear projection TV, it will have overscan. If it's a flat pannel, they normally have an option to turn off overscan.

yeah some studios say 1.85:1 but they actually show a 1.78:1 image

Warner and Paramount open up their 1.85:1 releases slightly to 1.78:1, so there are no black bars at all on a 16x9 screen.

Disney, Fox, Sony, and Universal keep their 1.85:1 releases as 1.85:1, so there should be very thin black bars at the top and bottom on a 16x9 screen. If you don't see these bars, check the display mode of your TV. It is different on every set so it's tough for me to tell you exactly what to do, but look for some sort of "Full" or "1-to-1 Pixel Mapping" setting. My Sony LCD TV's default setting is "Normal," and I only get rid of the overscan when I switch it to "Full."

some tvs (for example my Panasonic Plasma) have a full mode but then in the advanced setting have an HD Size option, mine has size 1 and 2, with one showing the full image and the other adding a really tiny bit of overscan.

Sure you got the right setting? I believe the no-overscan mode on Samsung TV's is called "Just Scan". Is on mine, anyway...

In 1.85:1 movies, about a 2% overscan prevents you from seeing the tiny black bars. Most digital displays use overscan features to prevent the black bars from being seen. In some displays (notably projectors and some flat panels) offer the ability to turn off overscan. Overscan can be useful for even home theater applications, for example, in Constant image height 2.35:1 screens that use an anamorphic lens, when you watch a 1.85:1 movie (without the lens) you either slightly zoom in the image to fill out the black bars, or if zoom won't allow, turn on a overscan so there won't be the small black bars, it will only appear only pillar boxed (instead of it appearing slightly post boxed where both vertical and horizontal edges appear), it's not so bothersome either way (I do tend to leave the overscan off and leave it as is).

I think so. I just press the Aspect Ratio button on my remote and it switches through them and this one is the best. "Wide Fit" displays it with no overscan, while "16x9" displays it with overscan, cutting off the sides of the screen slightly and getting rid of the black at the top and bottom of the 1.85 picture.
