Default Sony BDP-S1 Vs. PS3 Blu-Ray

I'm considering purchasing either a PS3 or the Sony BDP-S1 Blu-Ray player. The price of either one doesn't matter to me, but i'm wondering this...is there any difference in quality, controls or features in Blu-Ray movie watching on the PS3 vs. the Sony BDP-S1?

If you own or plan to purchase a some what rare high-end display that supports 1080P/24 then for the best picture quality go with the Sony BDP-S1. For the average person the Sony PS3 is ideal BLU-RAY player.

List of important features that are unique to the Sony BDP-S1

1080P/24 output with slightly better picture quality over the PS3

List of some features that are unique to the Sony Playstation 3 that the BDP-S1 does not do

Plays both audio CD’s and Super Audio CD’s.

Fast disc loading and response time

Has latest version of HDMI ver 1.3

Plays Videogames

Connection to the Internet for firmware updates and for future BD Live content.

There are other pluses and minuses to both models, but these are some of the main ones. I am sure other people can add to this.

Great info, thanks. I just learned about the BDP-S300, so might even wait for that, but the reason I'm even considering the PS3 is simply for the Blu-Ray, because I prefer my XBOX 360 anyways, so I'm not even looking into a PS3 for gaming, so I'm thinking about just going with the player, but still interested in everyone else's opinions about this.

What I do not like about the LG universal player is that it does not play HD-DVD interactive stuff. It's not a full HD-DVD player. One can get better quality purchasing a Sony PS3 for $499 and a first generation Toshiba for around $265.

Agreed.....and I personally would stick with Sony for all my home entertainment electronics.

For those that do own a XBOX 360 a HD-DVD add on device can be purchased for around $175. Universal Studios is the only major studio that is exclusive to the HD-DVD camp.

A few things I'd like to add:
- PS3 is lacking infrared or RF remote control capability. While this will not matter to everyone, a lot of folks (including me) have invested time and money into having a universal remote control so going back to multiple remotes just won't cut it for me (I don't even want to mention what my wife would say!). The PS3 has bluetooth based remote capability, but afaik BT capable universal remotes are pretty much non-existent.
- The PS3 uses much more power (~180W) for blu-ray playback compared to standalone players which are in the range of 20-30W. Again, this won't matter to a lot of people, but it's good to know.

That's really good to know. I'm starting to lean more towards the Blu-Ray unit seeing as I don't really care too much for the PS3 gaming, at least not right now, so while I'll eventually get a PS3, just to have it, I think I may just go with the player for now.

I have a high end universal remote also (MX-3000). I know that having an extra remote can bother people after spending a good bit of money on a universal remote. It should also be noted that this a temporary situation. Just like there are conversion devices for IR to RF controlling there will be IR to Bluetooth conversion for the same functionality.
