Headaches ahead for MGM. Either they sent out defective Bond discs to reviewers last week or the first batch of individual BDs won't play in the most updated Sony BDP-S300!
Very annoying. I just updated my firmware to 4.20 last week because the player wouldn't read "Young Frankenstein" and "The Happening" from Fox. After a five work-day wait, the requested update arrived from Sony (I have a Mac so cannot burn the updates at home!). The 4.20 was successfully installed and solved the problem with the Fox titles. Then the Bond movies arrived on Friday. It seems to boot up, gets to the menu screen, nut when you select "Initiate Mission" or any other choice on the menu screen the picture goes blank and the player sits idele. It refuses to respond to any command except "open." Have we all blindly followed into a techie war that hasn't been resolved yet? I mean, WTF? |

just out of curiosity as i had really weird issues at times with the s300, did you try this multiple times? and did you unplug it at all and then try again? i seem to remember this happening to me on a few movies, but after unplugging it for a minute or two and restarting it would get past the "hiccup" and play.

OK, here's the situation. I have the 4.20 firmware update. Confirmed. I have tried all six Bond BDs. None will start from the point of the on-screen menu. I was able to get into one of the extras, a vintage interview with Ian Fleming from Canadian TV. From there I was able to return to the menu screen, go in through the chapter menus to chapter three, then hit the previous button to get back to the beginning. That was "From Russia With Love." At that point it played as expected and looked and sounded fantastic for its age.
I was hoepful that I had found a way into the content. But I tried it on "Die Another Day" and none of that worked. Ditto "Dr. No." Dispirited, I went into a local mall video store today to ask if anyone else was reporting a playback problem. She said that none of their ordered copies of the Bonds on BD arrived with the Bond shipment and she seemed to think that a recall was the best explanation she had heard for the missing titles. So call me crazy or ignore my warning: Unless I have the only BDP-S300 that won't play the new Bonds, there's a recall going on that no one is talking about. ST |

I just tried Die Another Day on 3.9 firmware, worked fine, got to the main screen and hit play. Movie started, I didn't watch it yet so I hope it doesn't freeze or anything. Sorry for your issues, maybe it is your disc or even 4.20 firmware

for some reason I feel that every once in a while you should unplug your BD player and let it "reset" or whatever.

I only had time to test Thunderball on my S300 (301, actually) and it played fine. There was a slight delay but it worked and I tried the TV special and that was good, too.
As for the black screen, I also have the new S550 and it does go into that for several seconds before it starts the circling thing as it is loading, so expect that on the S300, too, just a bit longer. It seems to be normal. You just have to be patient. |

After a firmware update it isn't enough to just turn off/restart the player. If it doesn't do the reset automatically, because sometimes it doesn't, you need to reset the player manually. |

my newb justification for the resetting is that it's like a computer and needs to be reset every so often
