huh, so he thinks it needs firmware already, why is the ps3 so much quicker than everything else? I don't get it, it's not even a stand alone player, and it's faster than the stand alone players. ??????

It got a CPU that is several times faster than current CoreDuo (In FPU speed) so it got plently of speed to execute JAVA. The processor in those player must be like the one they have in the CELL Phones.. UBER SLOW.

The need to ask JAVA to do a Accel Chip for them, shoudln't cost a lot. Something like the speed of a P3 333mhz should do..

PS3 has mucho more CPU horsepower than our chip, that's why it's so much faster.

Instead of doing a Java accel chip (I looked into this and was told it wouldn't help), we increased CPU horsepower and memory bandwidth by 4x on our new SoC. Oops, I let something slip...

After reading the review it really makes you wonder if Sony released this thing without the same type of 2.0 firmware update we recieved for the S1...ever since v2.0 I've have no problems or issues at all with navigation or speeds; granted it's not lightning fast but no where near like it was before the udpate and the way he's describing the 300's operation sounds exactly the same as the S1 did pre-updates...hmmm?? Otherwise it appears to be a "mini-me" version of the S1 without the extra audiophile touches plus it includes CD playback and HDMI 1.3 at an attractive price point.

Definately sounds like it's missing the 2.0 firmware

At least I hope so

Thanks Keith. I added your main page to my favorites. I like the objective way you review products and your writing style flows nicely also.

Angry BDP-S300 Review

The reviewer failed to mention that when you power the unit off, and then on the BD discs starts up again from the begining, menus and all. To me, this is a huge issue since most of the time I don't finish watching movies in one sit, and I think it's a big hassle to be searching for the point where you left off.

Samsung and Panasonic first generation players have this option to resume playback even if the unit was powered off. Here we are with a supposely 2nd gen Sony player, and It doesn't have this option. Sony invented the format but other companies are putting out better player??? I don't know but I think Sony needs to get his act together and soon.

I had the Samsung BD-P1200 and it was much faster than this new Sony. It also had the resume playback option I mentioned above. I returned the Samsung because the new Sony player was cheaper, and I thought It would be also better. Sadly it is not, and now I'm thinking about returning this Sony and get my Samsung back!

So between the samsung and the new sony, which would u say has better pq and sound quality. I"ve heard that no player can resume these new discs with java which is a stupid thing, and i wonder if a firmware upgrade can change that?

The BDP-S300 is a cheap player. The PS3 is the best deal. It is much faster than any stand alone player.

The BDP-S1 does the same thing...It would nice if a firmware update would resolve it...but it's not particularly a huge issue for me...

The S300 has better sound quality, but if you don't have a high end sound system like me, then it won't matter. I'm into the best picture quality. I don't care about the sound quality that much.

The Samsung does not resume playback on java discs neither but I does so with any other BD discs with no java. The S300 does none of the above. I truly hope Sony gets the note and fix this soon via a firmware update.

Also, the Samsung powers on and load a lot faster than the S300. You'll notice the difference with the POTC BD discs. On the S300 the POTC discs takes an eternity to load. The Samsung loads these discs a lot quicker.

I think Sony released a second gen player with the same internal parts as the 1st gen player and only made some cosmetic changes to the outside......

I have read in the player section that a firmware upgrade 2.0 is released for BDP-S300 especially increasing speed for JAVA

Well actually I do have an expensive system, Marantz reciever and full JBL tower surround. I like audio at least as much as my picture, I"m a musician.
I saw the firmware upgrade already, does it fix the lag I wonder? HOpefully it will
1. fix lag
2. resume playback(atleast non java discs)
