Default Firmware upgrade for BDP-S300

V2.0 firmware upgrade is available for the BDS-S300. It is for the Java application. It is not listed on the website yet, but if you call 1-866-909-7669, they will mail you the disc. You may want to check your version first, mine has 2.0, but they are sending it out any way. Not sure what that is about.

When I called, they really didn't give me much info, just that it is the latest software. Version 2.0, The player came with a sheet saying to call or check the website for the most current firmware for BD-J. They assured me it is for the S300, but like I said, checking my player it says it has version 2.00. So if this is the same or a 2.01 or what i'm not sure, but they are sending it out. A week to 10 days. This is the note inside:

Note about Interactive Capability of BD-J (BD-Java)
Some BD-ROM discs, like the packaged movies, provide enhanced features with a new software application technology known as "BD-J".
To enjoy the BD-J function in some discs, you may need to update your player with the latest firmware.

Please visit www.sony.com/blurayupdate or call 1-866-909-7669 to learn more about upgrade.

I saw a post on AVS forums about people also getting the discs sent to them.

This is how you can find out on the BDP-S1 - my guess is that it's probably the same for the S300. Give it a try.

Check Current Firmware Version
Power on the television and make sure it is tuned to the inputs to which the BDP-S1 player is connected.
Power on the BDP-S1 Blu-ray Disc® player.
If the player starts to play a disc, press the "STOP" button and wait until the blue Sony Blu-ray Disc screen is displayed on the television before proceeding.
On the remote control (RMT-B100A), press the SYSTEM MENU button.
At the "System Menu" screen, use the arrow keys on the remote control to highlight "Setup" and then press the ENTER button.
At the "Setup" screen, use the arrow keys on the remote control to highlight "Video Setup" and then press the ENTER button.
Use the arrow keys on the remote control to highlight "TV Type" and then press the ENTER button.
On the remote control, press "BLUE" button.
The firmware version currently installed on the BDP-S1 will be listed on the television screen. If the version number is 2.00 or higher, it is not necessary to install this firmware update.

I'm sure the 300 follows in the footsteps of the S1 as far a what the firmware accomplishes. Here's what v2.0 does for the S1. As far as the unit being able to resume, it's my understanding that they're aren't any players that do that.

What does this do?

This utility updates the BDP-S1 firmware to version 2.00, and provides the following benefits:

Improvements over firmware version 1.60:

Adds Dolby® TrueHD and Dolby® Digital Plus Audio decoding functionality.
Improves BD-Java compatibility to enhance interactivity with some BD-ROMs.
Enhanced playback compatibility with certain BD-ROM format discs.
Additional improvements over original firmware:

Enhanced playback compatibility with certain BD-ROM format discs.
Improves BD-Java compatibility to enhance interactivity with some BD-ROMs.
Enhanced customer support capability
Compatibility with the newly released BD-R/RE format (BDMV).
Corrects the output signal status information for audio output and display when Linear PCM 5.1 channel soundtracks are played via HDMI.

The above post will work for the S1 and the S300. It's how I checked mine when I did it a couple weeks ago.

I don't believe anyone has said that yet. None of the firmware upgrades out there (up to 3.70) have allowed the S300 to decode Dolby TrueHD or dts Master Audio.

The word is yes because it was done with the S1. It shipped without the ability and it now has it due to a firmware upgrade.

For my part, I'm mostly interested in speed. If firmware can continue to fix the slowness of the S300 then I'll be a happy kid.

Now for that hopefully someone more knowledgeable comes along to answer. I can't say if A) the S1 has 1.3 or B) If you have to have it to pass true hd. If it doesn't have 1.3 I guess that would answer the question too though.
