When I saw that my local BestBuy had the Sony in stock, I returned my Phillips and got the Sony.

Nice solid feel to the box itself. And the picture looks great. The only problem I had was I prefer using the optical output to my audio receiver instead of taking everything to the TV in the HDMI cable and then taking the audio back out of the TV and to my audio receiver. To me it just sounds better, a richer sound if it goes directly from the player to the audio receiver with the optical output.

However, I found that when I did that, I got a loud humming sound out of the speakers for about 1 second if I hit the pause button or the skip to next chapter button. And also, there is a 2 - 3 second delay after the video restarted before the sound kicks back in.

I tried taking the sound out of the TV and to the audio receiver and there is no humming sound or any delay between the video restarting and the audio kicking in. But again, it just sounds better if I use the audio cable. I called Sony customer service and after trying a bunch of stuff, we found that in the audio setup, if you change the Dolby Digital, and the DTS to the Downmix PCM option there is no more humming on pausing or skiping to the next chapter. It looks like my sound system is the problem. Just needs to have the older sound options sent instead of the newer ones. Looks like once I get my new HDTV and my Blu-ray player paid off, I might be shoping for a new surround sound system.

Almost forgot, it also plays standard aspect DVD's correctly. The only real problem I had with the Phillips was that on standard aspect DVD's it would stretch it horizontally to fill the screen. Sony plays them correctly.

Picked up my Sony bdp s1 yesterday, It plays beatifully, It has a solid construction and weight to it to suggest quality. Only downside is I paid full price at Best Buy. Just started watching Underworld and the picture is Fab

A friend of mine bought a BDP-S1 at Best Buy. It was working for two days and then it suddenly wouldn't play any blu-ray movies that were playing fine before the problem started. Luckily, Best Buy still had some in stock so he was able to exchange it for another.

I just got mine today at Best Buy. They gave me 10 percent off the player and the HDMI monster cable. I watched the free Fifth Element disc it came with. Pretty amazing. The Fifth Element had some film damage due to the master print. I can't wait to see a movie thats made with 1080p in mind.

A standard def dvd played excelent. I was amazed how it looks upscaled compared to how standard def TV looks on my Sony 40" XBR2 LCD.

What movies should I get?

We picked this player up today. We are still waiting on the pioneer player to show up that we have on order through tweeter. Maybe someday it will show up. No 10% off at our Best buy <Arghh>

Anyway, The kids wanted to watch Home Alone (DVD) so I popped the DVD in the drive and started playing. We got about an hour into the movie and the screen froze up. In order to get the movie to start playing again I had to remove the DVD, reboot the device, stick a blu-ray disc into the drive and then put the DVD back in and then I was able to actually start the DVD back up and pick the scene that we left off on. We were then able to view the rest of the movie. The disc was scratched up pretty bad (Netflix disc) so it could have had something to do with it.

One MAJOR disappointment with this player is the following:

I have a Sony Ruby projector and I had high hopes of actually watching movies in 1080/24p via the only way the Ruby can accept that signal (component) Well, when hooked up via component the 24p option is ghosted out on the Sony.

Major let down. I sure hope the Pioneer allows 24p via component. The Sony even says that 24p is only available through HDMI. So...in order to get 1080/24p I will need to get an external processor that supports 1080/24p input and then be able to output it via 1080p/48hz via HDMI (connected to the Ruby's DVI port). So we would have to spend another 3 grand on a decent processor.

The player is soild built, the remote is decent. The time it takes to boot up is a little long but once it's powered up, it does not take long to start up the DVD or bluray movies.

A quick bit of froogling and I found the Sony Pearl for $3599 and I am sure that you will get quite a bit for your Ruby on ebay/second hand market. That is of course if you want to sell and are desperate for 1080p24 via HDMI as the Ruby has other advantages over the Pearl (Xenon Lamp, Higher contrast etc).

Well I hooked my bdp-s1 up to my brothers hdila 1080p tv and watched mission impossible 3. I must say I was throughly dissapointed. Sending it back to amazon for a refund not worth 1,000 dollars IMO.

Nah, I don't think I would give up the Ruby for the Pearl even though the bulb is cheaper and it has 1080/24p inputs on the HDMI port.

BTW, the menu system on the Sony is much nicer than the usable but crappy ones on the Panasonic.
