Smile The Bat Barn

Hi everyone. I've been lurking here for quite a while & thought I'd share my recently completed home cinema room with you. It's taken about 8 months of sweat & blood, but the room went from this........

via this...

to this...

In a nutshell, the home cinema is on the 2nd floor of a detached barn, alongside my house. To make it habitable, it needed a new floating floor, the entire ceiling ripping out & insulating, re-boarding with dense plasterboard on the ceiling & dwarf walls to name just a few.

There are four circuits of lights & a good beefy power feed into the barn, and the system comprises a 10ft wide 2.37:1 fixed screen, Sony VW60 + Prismasonic FE1500R anamorphic lens, home-made infinite baffle subs with 4 x 18" Fi drivers , Audiolab & Rotel amplification, Sonus Faber and M&K speakers etc. The entire screen wall is made of acoustically transparent fabric with gobs of rockwool behind, and I have 6 diy acoustic absorption panels dangling from the ceiling, oh and black velvet panels on the side walls 1.5m out from the screen to tame light reflections.

It's been quite a labour of love, but it's finally done & I'm loving watching Blu-ray material in here on my Region A PS3 & Region B Sammy BDP-1500.

If anyone fancies a closer look, a UK forum did a short film of the room here, and there are a load more pictures in my gallery. Cheers!

It looks awesome. I think it would have been cool if you left the rocks exposed to give it more character. But it turned out great.

It might have looked cool.... but would have done nasty things to the sound.

Gotta say - one of my favorite HT rooms I've seen yet! How do the angled walls affect the acoustics? Is it have weird reverbs or sound alright?

Very nicely done - congrats!

Hi all, thanks for the kind words . I'm actually really pleased with the way the acoustics have turned out in the room. The angled walls should be, in theory at least, less succeptible to standing waves, although in a room with a vaulted ceiling you can get sound waves bouncing around in the ceiling space & coming down in the form of delayed reflections.

In an attempt to get around some of this, I made up some acoustic absorption panels & hung them from the ceiling so they can absorb on both sides. The screen wall is also completely acoustically transparent (apart from the screen), with absorption behind, and of course the carpet helps. The "clap test" shows the room has a nice tight signature without being too dead.

I didn't calculate any of the acoustic treatment scientifically, I just did a bit of research as I went along & got lucky in the end I think . Waterfall graphs confirm that things look pretty good above ~80hz, although there's quite some low frequency reverb due to the floor moving around (sound pressure, not mechanical from the IB subs), and it essentially acts a bit like a huge diaphragm. Still, that tactile bass is kinda fun, if not the absolute purist way of doing things . I already have one acro-prop downstairs, and may add more if I can find some on the cheap. This would cut down on some of those vibrations, although to be honest they only appear on the big hits, and it's cheaper than buying butt-kickers .

Edit - oh I'll get some more pictures of the speakers sorted as requested :-)

Very well done! I love the exposed beams (I imagine myself cracking my head on them all the time in the dark). I also really like how you handled the equipment rack. Really, really cool!

If the entire screen wall is made of acoustically transparent fabric, why isnt the center channel behind it? Just curious....

The screen isn't acoustically transparent...that would have been too much of a compromise on image quality (and price!).
