Default when the war is over.....

an interesting discussion broke out at my st. pat's day party. we had been watching boondock saints (dvd) followed by the departed (blu-ray) and my xbox friends were doing their normal ''well it looks good, but the xbox w/the add on is still cheaper''. which was met with the ps3 friends talking about how hdmi output and less compression make a better hd experience. this is all backstory to the real conversation. what will happen when hd-dvd disappears?

one of my friends believes, and has a valid point, that once blu-ray wins the price's of the blu-ray movies will go up closer to their suggested retail price because of the lack of competition. I believe that the competition with regular dvds will keep prices in check. the same things are being said with terrestrial radio and satellite radio. will xm and siri raise their price's if they merge?

the price of the BDs is important to me. what do you think will happen?

If Universal only released movies in Europe, and Sony/Fox/Disney only in North America, would they be considered to be in competition?

Would people expect Sony, Fox, and Disney to charge less if HD DVD won?

Hmm well when the format war is over more people will probably buy into blu-ray and the increased sales could lead to lower RRP....

The price of BD will be determined by several things.

1) Replication cost. It must be closer to DVD.
2) BD consumers. The more people buy BD players, the lower the cost can be.
3) HDTV migration in the US. The more Americans own HDTVs (by 2009), the more HD content they'd want to see at their own time.

The price of hardware and software have nowhere to go but down.

The price of a BD will be determined by only one thing, what the studio want to charge us. The replication costs, consumer rights, all of that doesn't matter. Fox will continue to charge us a lot for a BD just because they feel like it.

Once BD has won the war, the cost of replication will be minuscule and there will be a ton of players out there, but the studios will charge what they think their product is worth.

Once HD-DVD is gone Blu-ray prices will 100% drop. It is just simple laws of economics and business models. Since most of the cost in production comes from just setting up production it becomes inherently cheaper per unit as the units prodcued increase. That means that once HD-DVD is gone Blu-ray's sales will clearly skyrocket. Since they will now be producing many more Discs and Players the cost of producing each unit will decrease meaning they will then be able to sell them cheaper.

I don't know, they're just friends of mine.

when competition disappears so does the need to undercut an opponent. I thought that's the way it worked.

When HD-DVD disappears, the competition comes from the many other CEs that have yet to market their BD players. Not just in terms of BD players but also in the forms of BD burner drives, AV receivers, HD DVRs and home-theater-in-a-box sets.

larger userbase always leads to lower prices.

look at any business, be it cell phones, video games, dvd etc.

remember when the razor was $599?

I remember paying $69.99 for R-type on the turbografx16

remember DVD's for $24.99 at walmart? I do!

i'm sure that's what he was thinking.

I thing the main difference between this and the vhs/beta and vhs/dvd wars is that you need an hdtv to see the difference between these two. so until analog disappears won't that be a big factor in the number of players and disc's sold? keeping operating costs high.

Ehhhh.... Yes you can and should include the price of the 360!!!! Not everyone owns one. If that's the case you should just disclude the fact that the PS3 is a gaming console altogether!! Jackass!
