Default What Blu Ray to buy?

Ok,I am seriously on the verge of buying one this week.

I am very new to the whole Blu Ray FAQ.
I'd like to get one that is relatively easy to use and has all the features.
I keep hearing about the time it takes to load...does that vary?
What kind of time are we talking?

Obviously price is kind of an issue. I don't want to spend $400 on one that will be under $200 after ThanksGiving,ya know?

Help a newbie out!....Thanks!

Well, have you considered purchasing a PS3? Or are you looking for a low priced stand alone player?

EDIT:
If you are interested in a PS3 (Which does have excellent load times) here is a link to get it for only $299 as long as you purchase 4 Blu-Ray Movies, which has a great selection in titles too especially for a new Blu-Ray Member such as yourself.

Agreed. For now, the PS3 is your best all-around starting point.

Listen to the family.

I started with a BDP-S305

Buy a PS3 and have no hassles....EVER.

Heck, the unit itself even looks better then anything out there.

I am sold on the Samsum BD-1500 but its a bit more expensive then many other stand alone player out there....the PS3 is not a bad idea if you plan to play game, for a long while I was thinking of the PS3 but in the end wasn't for me, I would truly not buy that many games to play anyway, so I went for a stand alone, got it a a good price when buying my Samsung TV

The PS3 is one of the best blu ray players on the market. Even if you don't play games, you have the potential to. In addition, you can add music, video files, photos, and even use it as a web browser or hook it up to the internet. The PS3 is the best option. I know people who have stand alone players even with the latest firmware updates and it takes forever to load the discs.

i think the ps3 is rather ugly myself. at least compared to stand alone players. for a gaming system it's not that ugly though. just in terms of blu-ray players (which i know it's not all the ps3 does).

Think of them as Operating System updates if you want to compare it to a computer.

Depending on the player it can be a lot like doing this to yourself.

The ps3 automatically udpates over its' internect connection and is probably the easiest in regards to firmware.

Firmware updates are what you will need to keep the Blu-Ray Player working with the latest titles. Like your computer needs updates every so often your Blu Ray player will too and they are free. If you were to get the PS3 it has built in WiFi for wireless internet access and it will notify you any firmware updates needed so you can download straight to the system.

Like I said even the best players out there with the most current firmware updates take forever to load.

OK, sooo

I would have to place a Blu ray player near my internet connection?

What if it is nowhere near the phone line?

Sounds like a pain in the ass...do you have to constantly keep upgrading? WTF is that all about?

All I want is a simple player that will do everything I need to do as far as watching movies

Get a PS3. A standalone would be about $100-130 cheaper, but the PS3 is easily upgradable, simple, and able to play other types of media (like divx videos, youtube videos online, and other vids, music, and photos stored on disc or external hard drives.

Playing blu-ray movies are simple, they load up instantly like a standalone, but faster.

As for other players, there are a few just under $300 made by Samsung, Sony, and Sharp.

I have two Samsung BD-P1400's and they haven't need to be updated sine June/July. The updates are generally for improvements upon the original playback as well as compatability with new disc technologies, i.e. BD-Java updates, etc.
